"No-Name" Build Logs - 900D

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Finally decided to finish my 900D project.  It will take a LONG time to complete but it feels good to finally get it started.  I will be using older parts (Might seem inadequate for this kind of build) for this build but they are things I am happy to use for a long time.  Basically going to re-paint the case white/red and installing the water parts once I receive them.

Let's get down to it.

Probably not going to find it.

Can't wait to see it.

May I ask, just out of curiosity, what do you use for sanding?

I will be wet sanding with either 800, 1000, or 2000.

3M Automotive Wet or Dry Sandpaper.

Oh lord, the dust is worse than @Barnacules 's old machine. Same can be said about the cable management.

Yea I know, spending a lot of time right now cleaning the parts of the case.  As for the cable management, I have no excuse.

Update #1

900D taken apart so it will be easier to paint.

Question about the filters on the left, the ones with visible dust still on them.  Since I do not plan on painting them the same color as the case, is it easy to get new mesh and glue them back?  And if it is, where can I get similar mesh?

iLetrsh.jpg

Wind breaker for when spray painting outside and controlled ventilation when I am inside.

Had to make sure the 900D frame could fit inside.

7xdAXqO.jpg

zXHlxSA.jpg

Front and Back panels + HDD bays primed.

Every part that is drying will be stored in a covered clothing rack to prevent some dust and cat hair from making contact.

The parts below were originally painted with out the wind protector.  The paint was uneven and there were random splotches.

That cable management is sinful. Please tell me the updated build will be nothing like that.

get a can of compressed air and go to town on those filters.  Not very easy finding similar material - I looked.  But I'm also in Canada and everything is 10 times harder to find here.

Update #3

Taking awhile to paint because of the snow.

Started to add red to the pieces

EkSJAUF.jpg

Pieces that need to be painted white are in 1st and 2nd coat of primer.

Le3RZip.jpg

AOln6GE.jpg

sz6pQUj.jpg

The main frame still needs to get primed.  Going to do it once all the smaller pieces are done.

Probably not going to paint the pieces with the mesh since I do not want the paint clogging the ventilation.

Update #4

Taking apart the NZXT Sentry Mix 2 Fan controller (Pre-Cleaning) and getting it ready for priming.

G6tXaJl.jpg

aVemU6u.jpg

Getting the one of the radiators ready.  Putting cardboard pieces in-between the mounting screws and screw shield.  It nicely fit and there is minimal contact with the fins.

qj4wyjS.jpg

KVAIII8.jpg

Yay, more parts came in.  EK Dual D5 pump, EK Top converter for X3 Res, and EK X3 150 tube res.  Realized all that I bought did not have the circle engravings on them, oops, wanted to highlight those parts red.  Explains the Clean part in the name.

fU6Sidv.jpg

Also going to be replacing the Noctua fans on the radiator for EK Vardar F3-120s.  They are cheaper and seem to perform as good if not better than the Noctuas, though I am not sure how the gray fins will look with the white case.  Tempted to get the Furious versions but I do not know how they will act with less than 50% PWM.

looking great!  Can't wait to see the final case after painting and re-assembled.  Subscribed!!

Update #4

With crappy weather and some set backs I managed to get a little further with painting the case.

Getting the CPU Block and reservoir caps ready for priming.

eaN8jZL.jpg

Hopefully able to get the EK logo red.

KGmK82V.jpg

Getting the copper sealed off.

swfKWlU.jpg

Ghetto attempt at sealing off the parts that get in contact with water.

xQ3MWCt.jpg

Taping off areas that need to stay white.

NC13hgw.jpg

s6ExPfx.jpg

wZV8LgU.jpg

The big reveal of the two tone parts.  Had a very small issue with the painters tape peeling the paint off.  I either did not clean those parts correctly, did not wait long enough for the primer to settle (Waited about 3 days for it), or I use to strong of painters tape (Maybe I should have went with the delicate version??? This is what I get for trying to save a few cents.).  Overall I think it came out pretty nice, minus the crappy edges.

Here you can see where the damage was greatly done on the lower drive bay and vents.

Update #5

Well it has been awhile, but it looks like things are finally closing up.  Just received the last of my order and the last parts are being clear coated.  I should have the images of the computer case posted by tomorrow.  900D has WWAAYY to many pieces.

VARDAR VARDAR VARDAR!!!

KPRsIud.jpg

R1OAf3h.jpg

The Quick Disconnect fittings were a lot larger than I thought.  The box for the 90 fittings are behind it.

Hopefully things go well and I can have another update tomorrow.

Update #8

Parts are in their new home and I had the tedious task of managing all the wires.

All the water cooling parts are now also installed.  Quality is low for the pictures since they were taken on my phone.

Definitely should have gotten a bigger res.  Might need to replace that 140mm Noctua since it makes a whining noise when higher than 50%.

Vardar fans are much quieter than the Noctuas on full blast.  Should have gotten two more on the front.

cxmLLa9.jpg

Kind of cozy in there.

5wVQuan.jpg

DEGyA3F.jpg

Cable management is a lot neater than before.  The only ones left are the SATA and Molex connectors.

KfF1R2q.jpg

So close to being done.

Instead of buying the black Noctua fans, I decided to save a few bucks and use what I already had.  Surprisingly the color doesn't bother me much, just the noise the back fan creates.  Going to look into what I can use as a replacement.

I will watercool the GPUs once another generation comes out.  Most likely something after the Titan X.  It was originally planned to add custom sleeves to this build but I could not fit it in the budget.  I will probably do some in the future, maybe when I get the video cards.
