You can now legally download Windows 7 ISOs, if you have a proper key. No more "iffy downloads" that may or may not be injected with wonderful spyware.

Enjoy!

Oh cool.

That makes putting Windows 7 on VM's much easier :)

Hopefully you can do it soon with Windows 8 too :P

Using the TechNet Evaluation Center http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/ you can download copies of Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 (and newer) for free. They are 90 day for desktop and 180 day for server, trials with an evaluation product key. Of course, they are enterprise versions, but that's fine for a VM.

If you have a Windows 8 or 8.1 product key for a normal version you can use this page: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only to get the ISO for it.

I tried to use this about a week ago. I used a key I bought as a student. It told me the key was in the wrong language for what I chose. There didn't seem to be a right language.

I bought the key in English but it wouldn't let me.

So I went sailing. Thanks Microsoft for not working.

At least this is web based and not a stupid tool that only works on windows.

e.g. broken windows 8 or 8.1 install, have linux installed on a second partition need an iso to repair windows install. Can't use the tool because you can't boot windows.

(Most people have multiple computers... well that's how I got around it but still inconvenient)

Did anyone else notice that this site sends the product key you enter unencrypted over the wire? I thought it may have been a useful tool until I saw that.

Oh no, is that true? Pretty big cock up by Microsoft if that's the case.

Is there anything wrong with doing this:

1.  Grab ISO, and install Win7.  You have 30 days to activate.

2.  Update everything and clone the drive.

3.  Every 29 days, take the 10 minutes to format and install the clone.

This would be considered stealing, right?

They probably have something in the TOS that doesn't allow that, but if they don't then it's not stealing or piracy.

It is a real inconvenience though so I don't recommend anyone doing it. All your programs will be reset as well.
