EXP GDC External PCI-E x16 Adapter for Laptops

I was looking for a mobile solution to take a graphic card plus a computer to my high school business department to push 6 1080p monitors for a game of League of Legends :P

The new MSI GS30 Shadow and Alienware Graphic Amplifier is too expensive. So I dig around in Google for other solution.

Then I found a company in China on taobao.com that sales a product called EXP GDC.

It allows laptops with an expresscard slot, Mini-PCI-E, NGFF or mini PC with PCI-E x1 slot to accept a PCI-E x16 Graphics card externally.

http://expgdc.taobao.com/index.htm?spm=a1z10.3-c.w5002-7098247987.2.t4LISj

Since I have a Lenovo ThinkPad x201 with an ExpressCard Slot I immediately purchased it.

The EXP GDC Beast v6.1 unit plus silver case and an extra PSU plug converter costs me 488 RMB, about 70USD.

The package arrived yesterday and I began assembly.

At first I thought the adapter was kinda sketchy but I like it

I doubt ExpressCard will be viable for much longer-if you plugged a 980 into it the card would definitely be bottlenecked.

Actually, there is this : http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/PE4C%20V2.1.html- which is the same thing, with PCI-E 2 support and also allows you to use 2 mini-PCI-E slots if your laptop has 2 for x2 lanes PCI-E. That should be just enough to not bottleneck GTX 980.

I can confirm. EXP GDC made a new eGPU adapter that 2x or 4x the bandwidth of what they offers. It uses two HDMIs to conduct data transfer and uses M.2 M key to do the magic as it offers up to PCI-e x4.

So all new generation Intel Wifi solution that uses M.2 M key should be able to use this new version to use eGPU.

Hi guys,

I've got an NGFF slot on my computer, but I was wondering, would this setup work? I don't understand much about GPUs, so if something is not correct, could you please let me know what it is for learning?

1- get an adapter NGFF to PCIe 4x - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121992739234

2- get a cable adapter from PCIe 4x to 16x - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/391247745054

3- Buy an external power supply

4- Buy an external graphic card

5 - Provide power directly from the power supply to the graphic card (ie, without the need of the box provided by EXP GDC)

Wouldn't this work?

Hi,

everyone says it needs external monitor - it does not, it is fairly easy to set up for playing from internal monitor if game supports windowed mode, I made a small c# app that automates the process and makes game look like fullscreen

https://sourceforge.net/projects/nooptimusfix

however it won't work for games without windowed mode support, though there are various applications that hack games to work in windowed mode, this one for example:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

though I doubt it will work with my app unless I add support for dxwnd to it

You will be more limited by the fact that your using express card as the connection. I recommend trying to connect directly to one of the (if you have) spare mpcie slots on your laptop. Generally those will be faster then expresscard which is usually highly limited.

Hi. I have the same GPU (GTXX275) and also the expresscard version of the EXP GDC (v8.4d).

Seems to work if i put my pci express slot to 1. Generation Mode in the bios (Thinkpad t530 i7)... have you managed to run it in Gen 2/Automatic mode?

Would be cool to compare Benchmarks aswell.

Best,

Anika.
