Comcast ripped off Apple's tagline to make a TV remote look special

One of the most recognizable (and perhaps pompous) parts of Apple's brand is the phrase printed on just about every single product the company makes: "Designed by Apple in California." It greets you when you open the box of your $3,000 iMac, and is emblazoned in tiny type on the back of the Apple TV remote. It's unsurprising for a company so focused on design, and some of Apple's competitors have included similar references on their own flagship products.

And now, Comcast is doing it. On a remote. With Apple's signature font, no less. Behold:

RJUWIEB.png  Screenshot_2015-02-17_10.55.02.0.png

That's some mighty hifalutin talk for a cable box remote. Particularly when you consider the fact that Comcast just now decided that it made sense to add an "input" button to the X1 remote. I suppose that's the genius of Comcast design — if you don't include an input button, maybe your customers will be too lazy to switch over to their Apple TV to rent a movie and will buy something through on-demand instead.

I'll leave you with some copy from the remote's page on Comcast's site:

This premium backlit remote has an all new design that feels great in your hand and adds new functionality that our customers have been asking for. You can now easily change the input selection on your TV with the "TV Input" button.

I think the bigger news is that people believe Apple owns the rights to "Designed by X in Y".

Apple doesn't even own the Myriad Pro font. It was designed by Adobe.

Then what's the point of this thread if it's such a small deal? why would it even be considered news if people didn't consider it to be apple's "thing"

It's more than just a sentence lol

Anybody really find these 'Designed in' prints impressive? I'd be more impressed when it has a 'made in not the cheapest country we could find' print.

Dude, it is so cheap. Yes the phrase shouldn't be copyrighted but please agree that this is just a bullshit cheap move. Perhaps sueing is a bit too much, but comcast really shouldn't be doing this.

No company should ever have the right to copyright/trademark/claim (or whatever) any sort of font (unless they made it) or text in any form.

All I see is a company stating who designed the product and where. Nothing wrong with that and certainly not something Apple can "own" let alone sue another company for doing so. Also the format is basic:

Designed by [COMPANY] in [LOCATION]. Chances are a company or manufacturer has used that exact format before Apple.

It's nothing but a sentence. This is a great example of what's keeping many industries in one place these days. You can't use a fucking sentence because someone >>might<< think it has something to do with another brand, why? Because it's "Apple's thing". Bitch please.

Same with the "Fortress Fallout" topic, you literally can't use a single word in your game name because fuck you. Language only has so many words, and companies with cash in the great land of free and prosperous just sit on patents they don't use but fuck over many with them, because they can.
