Err, Cooler Master doesn't make liquid coolers. They license from Asetek, Coolit, etc...

People will still make extremely stale jokes about how the R9 295X2 will heat their house because it is water cooled. It's like people think backwards though.

Water cooling does make the house hotter, depending on how you look at it. The water cooling transfers more heat to the surrounding air, therefore making the air around it hotter. Of course, total energy is the same. 

 

 

However, I do think people have a tendency to overclock water cooled cards so that also produces more heat.

Seems like the fans are running off the pump which controls the fans based on the water temp and with such a compact rad it's never going to allow for speeds below 1000 rpm. Pumps are just running flat at full speed, afaik Asetek pumps usually run at 3000 rpm and we got two of them which I won't expect to be quiet anyways.

The cooler on the 295x2 is just poorly designed, like there's a lot of R&D to it. How much effort would it take to just use 2K rpm pumps instead and much slower fans if that thing never hits above 70° like many people here claim? Asus did a much better job with the Ares 2.

TDP is rumoured to be around 300W, so goodluck cooling 2 of them on air with acceptable noise output or temps. People who can afford two of those, I'm pretty sure they can afford a case with 2x 120mm slots. AMD is doing the right thing if the 300W rumour is true and I'm heavily interested in getting one of those IF theyre quiet.

They actually have to water cool it otherwise it would over heat no matter what. Cray started stacking memory like this about 16 years ago and it creates massive amounts of heat in one spot

I don't think anybody is hating. Liquid cooling is premium which is why EVGA introduced a liquid cooled GTX 980.

Back in the Fermi days, PNY made a liquid cooled GTX 580.

How is it stupid? AIO even on the GTX 980 is better than the aftermarket air coolers (even EVGA thinks so as they are making one). Who want's a card throwing off massive amounts of heat inside of their case. Especially once it comes to multiple GPU configurations (bottom card cooking the top one). You can exhaust all of that heat directly outside of the case while maintaining much lower internal case temperatures. Plus the use of these coolers allow for a lot of overclocking headroom without worrying about thermals as much.

If the R9 390X is in fact 300w TDP then the card could be air cooled just like the R9 290X. Tho an AIO will give the card much more headroom and maintain much lower temperatures. Personally if I had it my way every GPU on the market 140w TDP and up would have an AIO on it. Lower thermals also means lower power consumption as there is less gate leakage compared to when transistors heat up. One thing to take away is the cards TDP. If the R9 390X does in fact have a 300w TDP then compare it to its little brother the R9 290X with a 290w TDP. Jumping from 2816 SP's to 4096 SP's only warranted a 10w TDP increase. If that is the case GCN 1.3 has to be more power efficient than previous generations.

Since when is pushing the boundaries for enthusiasts a bad thing? I'd rather have a full powered chip with an AIO than a cut down one on air that runs hot.

Looks great. Glad to see that AMD has learned from the stock Hawai launch debacle. Stock coolers need to be solid too. And it's not like this is difficult to mount, all you need is a 120mm fan slot...

 

I'm just hoping that AMD's board partners release air cooled versions because with the 295X2 they didn't, which scares me.

But that was a 500 watt TDP part. Two 290x chips on one die.

This might be one of the first single card solutions that can actually handle 4k gaming judging by the looks of the stats though.

I think what Linus said about the 295x2 can be applied to this card as well, when you look at the new technologies AMD is using for this card.
