And if you say "true 4K" is 4096*2160, then "true 2K" (by your logic) is 2048*1080

 

No? Because I remember distinctly many people calling it 2K resolution when the G3 came out... and it's listed under the 2K standard. So don't tell me it's bullshit.

Well 4k refers to the horizontal pixels, so 4096.

2k is actually something that doesn't really exist, or at least not that I know of, but it would be 2k.

2.5k is something we all know and love: 2560*1440

So our 1080p resolution is just slightly below 2k, since it only has 1920 horizontal pixels, instead of the 2048.

Kind like all the UHD displays, which are mostly refered to as 4k, but really have less pixels, slightly less, but less. (3840)

Something you all need to realize is that 2K, 3K, 4K aren't specific resolutions. They are defined as on the order of X horizontal pixels. That definition is a range, not a specific number.

I did read my post. Like I said, the common names are not exactly accurate with "true" resolution.

In that case? 1080p is referred to as FHD

2K can be one of several different formats, including QHD, but that is the most common use for 4K in non-"true" resolution.

4K is commonly mistaken for UHD.

OP was asking from what seemed to be a consumer perspective, so I gave what people call them.

It's still a range. And 2048x1566, 2560x1440, 2048x1080, those ALL are on the order of 2K horizontal pixels. Yes, you can say FHD is on the same order, but no one refers to FHD as 2k, now do they.

Strictly speaking 2K and 4K are not 16:9 resolutions. When using them to refer to 16:9 there's always approximations, and 1920 is a lot closer to 2000 than 2560. Also 1920x1080 is literally half 3840x2160 (in both directions, obviously), which you've defined as 4K so it makes more sense to define that as "16:9 2K".

 

Personally I think misusing cinematographic terminology to sell monitors is stupid and confusing. 2160p notation is a lot better.
