Operation Core 2 Extreme revivial for just 40USD (building 80% done)

dragoon20005

#Disclamer for this build log:

(For anyone who thinks that I am stupid to waste money on this project should leave this tread now. (yes I am talking to you))

Reasons:

If you guys seen my rig in my profile, I am only running a Core 2 Duo system as my daily PC

  • CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 2.53GHz
  • Motherboard MSI P31 Neo 2 LGA 775
  • RAM 2 GB OCZ Lan party DDR2 800 kit CL4-4-4
  • GPU POV Geforce GT8600 512MB DDR2
  • Case CoolerMaster Centurion 5
  • Storage Maxtor 60GB, WD 250GB both IDE ,WD 320 SATA2
  • PSU Vantech ION2+ 500w PSU
  • Display(s) HP 20" 4:3, Philips 19" 4:3 monitors
  • Cooling stock LGA775 Intel cooler, CoolerMaster 120mm case Fan 80mm front intake
  • Keyboard Microsoft X6 Sidewinder
  • Mouse Microsoft Lasermouse 6000
  • Sound Creative X-Fi USB External
  • Operating System Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
The CPU is showing signs that it is dying as the CPU load always hit 100% at startup of OS and thats even with a clean OS upgrade from Win XP 32bit to Win 7 64bit and a remount of the cooler and reapply of thermal paste didnt help much at all.

I have swapped to a older E6240 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo and now the CPU load is stable when just booted.

The OS is in the WD 320GB HDD which was a hand me down from my dad's PC when he go the new i5 4460 rig

The aim is to renew the PC with some parts which i have got for cheap from friends, ebay and from sources I shall not mentioned.

I found a shop at my local PC haunt which has the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 for like 50 Singapore dollars which is estimated for around 40 USD

And there is still shops selling brand new G41 mobo like the Gigabyte G41M-Combo which will allow me to use up to 8GB DDR3 for 110 Singapore dollars or around 88 USD

Corsair Vengence DDR3 8GB Kit for 112SGD which is around 89USD

So in total will be 217USD or 272 SGD

But the price could be lower if i ask the boss of the shop for discounts

In addition to the CPU, mobo and RAM

I will also swap out the 8600GT for a Quadro FX4800 which I bought two of them years ago on ebay but one died so i still have one good working GPU

The Quadro FX4800 is basically the rebrand of the GTX260 but with 1.5GB of GDDR3 VRAM instead of the odd 768MB of the GTX280

Before anyone say "you dumbass, the Pentium G3258 will be way better!"

As mentioned in the disclamer, please leave this topic unless you want me to report you.

I do not play any recent AAA games, I just want to play old school games that I have like Mechwarrior 4 and web surfing but as I multi task, the dual core is not enough for my needs and 2GB is now a struggle when I open a few tabs on Firefox.

I will continue to updage this log when I get the parts on the next paycheck

I still need to send money to my parents and pay for my own living and travel expanses

The cooler is not yet in the planning stage but I have a feeling the current case will not fit the bigger cooler I am getting

the stock Intel Cooler will not cut it for the QX6700 even at stock speeds

So the cost may go up if i need to switch casing and get the CPU cooler

so I will have to pick the CoolerMaster 935 Stacker and CoolerMaster V8 GTS which are suppose to be in my future i7 5960X X99 build in the next or following year.

For now the Plan is to swap the CPU,Mobo,RAM and GPU for the above parts and retaining the rest

I will post photos of the current rig tonight

Thanks for reading

Regards

Dragoon20005

Noice. I am very interested.

Looking forward to the pics (even thought it's not a big X99 dragon build :P )

4GHz or death by voltage :D

You got an unlocked multi so you wont be pushing the FSB too hard on that poor G41 board.

Need to keep it stock since i dont know it past life. And i need it to live at least 2 more years before i upgrade to the X99

Well i seem to have better life with them. Newer boards nowadays cant really live beyond the 3 year lifespan with all the abuse. I picked the Gigabyte for the dual bios. And the old MSI board if well kept can live close to 10 years. Hopefully this board is the 2.0 rev.

At least it's nice to see people still wanna use LGA 775. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy. I mean, that platform still has a lot of life out of it.

ok here is the picture which you guys wanted to see

but the bad news is in

The mobo is dead :(

all thanks to my DIY re-apply of thermal on the Quadro FX4800

after installing the GPU and fire up the PC

I was greeted by a blank screen

so I swapped back my old GPU thinking it will be fine

but then the same result, no beeps

oh shoot...

took everything out like RAM, Unplugged HDD and DVD drive and network card except CPU

power on...  silence.... no beeps

RIP mobo...

Lga 1366 is the new 775 :P

(that was way more literal sounding than i hoped)

Unlocked xeons are a killer value...if you can find a cheap mobo

I have similar rig, and I have it for now hmm 8 years. My hd died few moths a go and I got new, and I was thinking like you to upgrade my pc and while I was researching I found linustechtips and this forum. And if its not necessary I wont be buying any of the old tech, but I will save so later in a year or so like you to buy new Pc and not waste money on something that I wont be using later on. So when I was buying the hd i bought WD 2tb green, witch should be come in handy later on with some ssd.
For other parts like cpu or gpu or even ram I'm not thinking on buying.

Good luck to you.
