Consoles may get 4K Hardware upgrade

Craider

Basically make them able to support 4k playback on video and then advertise them as 4k devices! gg pcmasterrace no re. Were finished boys, might as well delete the forum now. Somebody buy linusconsoletips as a website!

http://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2015/02/02/new-4k-capable-ps4-and-xbox-one-consoles-coming-this-year-predicts-netflix/

Netflix predicts 'new 4K-friendly versions of both consoles will be delivered this coming fall', based on the increasing sales of 4K TVs. This could even mean a new HDMI 2.0 connector, since the current 1.4 standard only supports 4K at 30 Hz.

they'll just update the display output on both consoles because anything can drive a 4k 60hz, and gaming is beyond doubt impossible with any all'n one hardware under $399. it was bound to happen.

Op you have missed the key part being

And afaik xbox one already does this just limited to 30hz which i don't know any movies out that are filmed in 60hz (i know there are some but ive never seen it)

neither of those does support the HDCP 2.2

Whats the "Official Standard Bitrate" for 4K video..?

Cos streaming 4K still isn't visually standard 4K if the bitrate is 20MB/s or lower.....would be nowhere near it right..?

I'm a 4K noob but... video data bitrates required for 4K to be feasible are?

In YOUR opinion, would you prefer .....1080p TRUE Bluray Quality 40-50Mbit/s VS 4K streaming quality ??-??Mbit/s

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

lol 4K console for $500 that can do 60FPS 4K no problem.

i doubt that.

maybe if they put a $500 GPU in there along with a $200 cpu instead of a $50 one...

I really want an xbox one case, to gut and shove a top end PC inside

Then do a video online of what a "next gen" console should REALLY look like

TRUE Blu ray???

Blu Rays are stone age technology wise. MPEG2 codec compression wise is just bad compared to H.264 or even better H.265

I rather have a 20Mbit/s H264 (or even better H265) 4K stream, than a 50Mbit/s MPEG2 (aka BR) stream.

Considering current consoles can barely run graphics intensive games at 1080p this seems to be ridiculous. And just because you can connect a console to a 4k monitor it doesn't mean you can play it at that resolution. Consoles have no options when it comes to resolution so none of these makes any sense.

You do realise they're talking about 4k video streaming and watching 4k videos on a TV right?

Wouldn't the HQ 1080p image be better than 4K compressed streaming content? <-- because of the compression?

they can't even get 1080 60fps so it's not like they will get above 30 at 4K so the HDMI 1.4 is fine

I make Rainmeter things and other art :D

also blu rays are compressed. they are just much worse efficiency than modern compression codecs.

Too bad, we can do 4k at 60hz, anyways, we're already on 8k and beyond

Like every third person in this thread has been saying for the last 5 pages, they're talking about 4K film/television content, not gaming. Why would Netflix be talking about gaming?

This "hardware update," if it happens, may just be a simple HDMI swap. Though unless I'm missing something, the consoles should already be capable of 4K @ 30 Hz which should be fine for virtually (or literally) all streaming 4K content.

Jesus, is everyone taking stupid pills, or did no one actually stop and think about what's being said!?

4K video playback is not the same thing as playing games at 4K! You don't need an R9 295X2 to play back 4K content. Their hardware will be more than up to this. Hell Intel iGPUs are up to this. You don't even need HDMI 2.0 to playback 30 fps (or less) content at 4K so no it's not laughable or unrealistic at all.

remember the days of Playstation1 , when a console had 5x the price/performance ratio of a gaming pc?

the massive success of consoles back in those days is the reason why consoles still exist today...
