Dual GPU cards may finally be able to combine their VRAM.

Assassin

This is HUGE!! for us with 2 gb cards now instead of buying a new gpu i'm gonna buy a r9 280x and get 5 gb vram.

no. He should make it bigger. WCCF is as reliable for news as Ubisoft is reliable for working launch titles.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Good stuff. I always had a problem with the way NVIDIA and AMD marketed their dual GPU solutions quoting the total memory. It was misleading for noobs. Sure mantle,dx12 and OpenGL next will fix that.

May not work like that...

They may still need to be the same series, ie: 280 and 280 with combined vram, not 270x + 280.

Because of the differences in shader core counts (SP's) and such differences, the sync would be destroyed and no doubt stutter would be seen, making 2x cards appear to be more jerky than one card.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

As much as I dislike WCCF I will make a compromise, I put a much smaller picture to minimize the clutter. Now it is just slightly larger than a regular post.

I just.........am lost........................for words...................that picture isn't big enough sorry... you'll have to enlarge it...

:)

On topic - Bout bloody time eh...

Been using GPU's before they were 3D accelerators, this has probably been the product of many pissed off engineers over the years trying to tackle the issue.

Or.. they had it semi-sorted a while ago but............see a need, fill a need.

This is cool, even if games have to be specifically optimized for it.  heavily modded 4k skyrim might be playable

So is this usable with just dual gpu cards or does it work with crossfire

Edit: jumped to conclusions

this news is actually quite old

a few days after Mantle was first showed off there was a 1+ hour dev conference

and they did say that this was possible with mantle

I wonder if we'll get ads now that say "4GB means 8GB. No, really."

What 8GB? But I bought 4GB card... I want my money back...

Mantle only + needs to be optimized by game devs.

So there will probably be 1 or 2 games next to battlefield 5 which supports the technology and that's it. Not so excited....

If DirectX 12 could do this, i would be soooo happy.

who cares...

Um, they both innovate and push etc, I think you'll just find it's marketing that leads people to think there is a difference.

On topic more: I have been reluctant to go dual GPU for many reasons but if raw performance improves I might have my arm twisted enough to have a crack at it.

Cool in terms of Mantle and DX12 I now have 8GB of VRAM or does this only apply to a dual card? Thats really damn cool that they'll get this to work.

AMD Ryzen 5900x, Nvidia RTX 3080 (MSI Gaming X-trio), ASrock X570 Extreme4, 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB @ 3200mhz CL16, Corsair MP600 1TB, Intel 660P 1TB, Corsair HX1000, Corsair 680x, Corsair H100i Platinum

Cool, now SLI 970's can have 7GB! :D

Who ever said that the 970 doesn't have 4GB of usuable vram?

I find it amusing how many people think this applies to SLI/Crossfire configurations. This is for dual GPU based cards such as the R9 295x2 and HD 7990.

Instead of consuming both memory spaces for the same resources the developer can optimize it as a single memory pool.
