Is 1440p worth the cost?

xnoobftw

sounds expensive as heck xD

Well, it is relatively expensive to produce, but it is expected that OLED display technology will become less expensive over the coming years. :)

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

Just got a ultra wide that's 3440 by 1440. Since most of youtube videos are shot in 12:9 ratio , end up using my monitor as a 27 inch 1440p display most of time. With a normal vision. The text is just the right size. We are just at the point where some content are 1440p. There are nothing out there that is 4k to watch. Maybe a trailer or two.

4K is hard to drive ... we don't have anything to watch on it ... I will go with 1440p .. or even ultra wide.

I can't speak for gaming... but I will not use anything other than IPS

I’m going to have to correct you on this. I have a 1440p monitor and with my current 2 780s I can run games like BF4 and get around 130-150FPS all maxed out(other than AA. I just run that at 2x since I cant tell a difference above that). any other game I own runs either around that FPS or higher. with the acception on crysis 3 which stays around 90-100fps.

1440p 144hz is very doable. 4k has around 8,294,400 pixels. even if you double 1440p that would still be easier to push than 4k. 1440p X 2 = 7,372,800 pixels.

yeah but my point is with a 144hz monitor you want to constantly exceed 144hz in order to benefit. no point having a 144hz panel and being content with 90fps!

I get playable framerates at 4k with a 770 but I'm happy as long as it plays, not worried about 30 or 60fps if it works and looks good I'm happy!

on the OLED front I was invited to Microsoft research centre in Cambridge about 9 years ago when I was 17. Was some tech conference and they were discussing OLED panels way back then and their benefits. all we had to look at was a rendered video as no working models existed. but they claimed within 10 years products such as cereal boxes would be made of OLED sheets and adverts displayed in them in stores. they reconned the tech would be so cheap by then it would be cheaper than cardboard!

haha looks like imagination is being held back by science! still I got to play on a pre release xbox 360 back then which looked like a desktop pc!!

The BenQ BL2420PT is a 24 inch 1440p IPS 60Hz monitor is hopefully coming out in Q2, it would look very good next to your 22 inch monitor.

yeah 4k is still too hard to drive, also SLI 970s/ 290x will still do a good job at 144hz 1440p so theres that

How do you think a single 290x will fair at 1440p 144hz? :o

Here's what I think and these points are based on my needs or what I care about.

1440p

- Can be driven by 1 card well (not dual gpus)

- 60fps+ with 1 card

- Can have ultra settings with 1 card

4K

- Can be driven decently by 1 card

- 30fps or lower with 1 card

- low to medium settings with 1 card

For 4K ultra @60fps+ you need to be in a crossfire or sli setup and I DO NOT RECOMMEND DUAL GPU CARDS, always run faster cards in a sli/crossfire setup. I actually recommend a 3-way setup for 4K Ultra 60fps with todays cards, I'm taling 980s and 290x not lower.

I think people need to be really serious at gaming to go and get a 144hz. For me 1440p 60hz IPS is the best chose.

I am into photography, so color is a huge deal for me . Poor TN panel's color shift is unbearable. The new panels out there might be better ... but once you go IPS.. you never go back.

1440p is not even that expensive, Korean monitors cost around $300 each.  2 of them and you have the price of your average 4K TN monitor.

Everything is expensive in my country :P

A asus vg248qe cost 550sgd (440USD) for comparison
