{Ye Oulde} Console alternatives :D my edition [updated {more like outdated} - 19/03/2018]

Sauron

THIS GUIDE IS OUT OF DATE. IN THE CURRENT LANDSCAPE IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO UPDATE IT. BUY USED.

-edit-

It is worth noting that windows 10 is free to all windows insiders. Technically you don't need to buy windows - although of course you'll be missing out a little on stability and support.

-/edit-

Hey guys :D

I've seen a lot of "smash your console" builds on the forum, and I figured I'd do my very own version! However, I decided to call it "console alternatives". This is because in previous build guides people have pointed out that the builds didn't include the OS or any peripherals. I often called bs on that argument, because of two reasons: the vast majority of people already own a windows pc in their house from which they could clone the installation (if they don't own a separate copy) and they can also benefit from the insider program - furthermore peripherals that will do the job just fine are incredibly cheap. With that said, I thought I'd do something even for those who really only have enough money to buy a console and a couple of games and for whatever reason don't already own a pc, so people won't complain anymore :) I also thought I'd make both intel and amd builds so everyone can choose what suits them best.

DISCLAIMER: the current iteration is targeted at the PS4 PRO and its current price point.

As pointed out above, this isn't quite exactly a "console KILLER" because it's just slightly better spec wise and comes at a slightly higher price. However, it comes with windows (the main reason why it wouldn't fit under the 400$ mark) and acceptable peripherals. Since this build is aimed at those who don't even own a family desktop, I would also point out that a pc offers a lot more functionality beyond just gaming, and if you don't have one you really should buy one asap. The excess money can also be very well regained by purchasing games during steam sales (depending on the game you might actually spare 40+$ on the first purchase) and by not having to pay the internet fee.
I tried not to cheap out too hardcore: the power supply is still pretty good. I also included a 1tb HDD because going for 500GB is just not worth it anymore. I also believe you shouldn't go with anything less than 8gb of ram.

Covfefe lake motherboards are still too expensive and there aren't any new pentiums, so for this one I had to stick with the older g4560. It should still do fine and the graphics card is faster than the one in the AMD build.

CONCLUSION:

As a supporter of the glorious pc gaming master race ( ;)) I always advise to buy a budget gaming pc rather than a console as they offer more power, the ability to do more than just gaming, more and cheaper games and the possibility to upgrade. However, what I really feel puts the nail in the coffin of something like a ps4 (which otherwise I would consider to be pretty good value) is the sub fee to play online. It simply removes the "low cost, full features" part out of the equation. Therefore, in most cases I would recommend getting one of the above builds with your money instead. Even the ones that include OS and peripherals in the end turn out to be cheaper, and are 100% ready to go once you put them together, you could very well not spend a cent on them anymore and still get the full experience out of all your games.
What I can concede to consoles is split screen multiplayer; although for a decent amount of games it can be done on a pc as well, consoles definitely support it better across the board (honestly that's a fault of the developers though).

Let me know what you think of these :) which one would you get if any? would you still buy a console? Why?

-2018 ADDITION-
As we all know, gpu prices are currently inflated due to crypto mining and shortages. On top of that, DDR4 ram is more expensive than DDR3 was. Because of this, I strongly advise anyone looking for a cheap gaming build to look for deals on used cards, instead of going for a new mid/low range one as the ones featured in these builds. Regardless of your choice of graphics card, the builds featured here should function as a cheap but balanced base.

finally found something to use my i3-4150 for should i get an upgrade for my desktop.lol

intel build since power is very expensive here and it could get very hot during summer..

might still get a console if budget allows it..and if I continue to drool over exclusives..( i like the Second Son )..although im aware it won't be worth it

I'm preferential to the newer is usually better logic when components come into the mix. I personally would get at least an i3 + 960 or equivalent.

It's better to save a few bucks and do it when you have a couple hundred more. Just my opinion though!

The projects never end in my line of work.

The problem is that consoles can be had for $350.

With a budget of $350, it's difficult to get a GPU that outperforms the onboard Iris graphics anyway.

No one seems to go that low with these posts :D

Well for 350$ you could get a decent build, thats an XB one. PS4 is 400$, and you can get linux or SteamOS for the OS and save 100$

SHAMEFUL DISPRAY

The thing is, I was targeting the ps4 which is 400$ :) if I were to target an xbone it would look something like this:

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 760K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($73.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Asus A78M-E Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard  ($47.98 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Corsair XMS3 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory  ($22.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair XMS3 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory  ($22.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R7 260X 2GB Video Card  ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Thermaltake VL80001W2Z ATX Mid Tower Case  ($19.99 @ Micro Center)
Total: $355.91

Which would still be faster than the xbone. Theoretically you could go for 4gb of ram to lower the price even further with minimal impact on gaming performance, however personally I feel going that low for the sake of sparing 5$ doesn't make sense. Sure, this variant does not have an os, so for those few people who don't have one already it could be a problem if they have exactly 350$ to spend and no more. At that point however I wonder what they'd buy the games with, since they can get pretty expensive when you can't use digital distribution without paying extra and physical copies are often priced very high. After buying two games the savings on pc would have probably allowed you to buy an os. Still, in that particular situation I can understand going for a console, although let's be honest, most people aren't there :)

Very well put together article! I quite enjoyed the read.

I'm currently in the process of parting out my computer, and in a couple months will purchase an Xbox One; it simply can't be beat price wise.

Now, I do agree that everyone should have a computer. I do; an ultrabook.

However I find the console, at $250 (I'm buying used) is a steal.

The downsides to purchasing one of the computers you listed, in my case, are as follows:

* The PC is twice the price.

* There are a lot of titles that just run like shit on the Pentium.

* Quite a few of my friends play on Xbox. We're a casual gaming bunch.

* There's maybe 3 games I want to play.

* I don't want to have a lot of things to do when I sit down to game. Pick up controller, three buttons, I've added a friend and am gaming. Sweet.

It's also worth noting that none of your builds included a monitor.

Does a console? You aren't forced to use this at a desk, you can use it with a tv just fine the same as you would with a console :)

Again there can be reasons for owning a console, and you seem to fit the description, however most gamers will play more than 2-3 titles and use multiplayer often (meaning they'd have to pay the sub fee). And as for getting parts used, well, the same can apply here if you really want to spare money ^^ but a console that is less than 1 year old for 250$ really isn't a bad deal at all.

Haha, yeah as soon as I walked off to make my tea I realized how stupid that was to say.

Yeah, for sure. There just aren't any more titles out that I want to play, that I can't play on my ultrabook.

Most of the games I'm looking forward to don't come out until late this year or early next...at which time I might as well wait for SkyLake/possible Pascal.

I play almost exclusively multiplayer, but I find the games just as fun on a console as a PC.

True, but chances are a whole lot slimmer of being able to properly run the games at a decent frame rate. Plus the cost would still be substantially higher.

Yeah, $250 for a console and 4 games is a pretty hard to go wrong with deal.

Its called having a TV >~>

PC's are sometimes twice the price....shown that the builds here are roughly the same price....you start saving the most money on games on steams which are constantly on sale for most of the time saving hundreds of dollars on purchasing games, some games on the Xbox LIve and PSN cost like 30 to 40 $ for years old lol.....compared to steam which you could probably get like six or seven games for about 50 $ depending on the sales and there are some nice cheap games as well. PC's also have the best thing in the world emulators! These can can help you play classic games on your PC with better textures and picture quality.     You can use a controller with a PC...its not that hard you just need to follow some guides and make sure the game supports controllers

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

To be fair these builds would not be very good at emulating anything more than metal slug ^^ but yeah it's a great feature to have.

-apparently never mind

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

See...that's where you're wrong.

Here the cost isn't roughly the same price, as the pricing is in US dollars. Console with 4 games $250, computer $575 (tax, conversion). Boom. More than double.

That's also without games, which are currently (yes, even on Steam) around $30 a pop. So there's a $120 value adder.

I wouldn't save hundreds of dollars on games. There simply aren't that many games that interest me. Same with the friends I play with.

What you PC elites need to realize is not everyone needs a library of 100's of games. We're perfectly content with much less. We have other things that take up our time.

I'd never be able to play through all those games...
