{Ye Oulde} Console alternatives :D my edition [updated {more like outdated} - 19/03/2018]

Sauron

See...that's where you're wrong.

Here the cost isn't roughly the same price, as the pricing is in US dollars. Console with 4 games $250, computer $575 (tax, conversion). Boom. More than double.

That's also without games, which are currently (yes, even on Steam) around $30 a pop. So there's a $120 value adder.

I wouldn't save hundreds of dollars on games. There simply aren't that many games that interest me. Same with the friends I play with.

What you PC elites need to realize is not everyone needs a library of 100's of games. We're perfectly content with much less. We have other things that take up our time.

I'd never be able to play through all those games...

quick question does it say the my name saying I replied to you ? On mine it just says the person replying to the topic......really confusing...

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

Don't forget the $60 a year for live/psn

So console costs $250, pc costs $450

3 years x $60 = 180 + 250 = $430 - close to the price of the PC after just 36 months of owning a console!

Imo if you have 400$ to spend on your cpu, mobo, gpu and maybe ram, then the pc is the way to go. If you have 400$ for the WHOLE system then I would take consoles, since they WILL play all games, at least 720p 30fps (I don´t really expect them to go that low) because even today these systems aren´t really that better than consoles and will be pretty much useless in 2-3yrs

Longboarders/ skaters message me!

You can grab it for $30 pretty easily when it goes on sale, which brings it down to a whopping $0.08 a day.

Considering I spend $7 a day on tea...it doesn't seem like an unreasonable figure ;)

Don't forget that $450 is in USD. Which is considerably higher when converted to CAD.

Parts are also quite a bit more expensive north of the 49th.

Yeah well here in the UK prices are even worse, but I can still do a £300-£400 build to match the £299-£350 consoles

on sale, yeah then just buy all your games in the 3 steam sales that happen every year, and humble bundle :D

dont forget pc backwards comparability! want to play that PS3 game? well you need to keep or buy a PS3, oh? ps2? yes that aswell, oh and a 360 while you are at it :D or you know.. just pop onto GOG and get the old game for £5 with no issues :D

Unfortunately the cost argument can be extended or contracted to suit the argument, "no tv included etc"  - but £££ for £££ console for PC, you can get a similararly capable PC, for the same to 25% more cost for the console

Whether those benefits are worth it or not are  up to the end user

Is a pentium g3258 and a 270( my build) a better experience than a console.

It would be kinda rocky in newer titles.

Just saying.

pentium and 270/750ti should still result in playable results for new games

Yeah, here not so much. Plus it's only $250 for the console and 4 games. ;)

I agree that Steam would be rather enticing, however I don't plan on waiting a year to buy the games on sale and play with my buds. So they're currently $30 - $40 each.

Console: $290 (with 1 year of Gold) Computer: $695 (tower plus 4 games)

Backwards compatibility is cool and all but I don't really have a use for it.

It could...but...computers need monitors too, no?

I get why PC gaming is better, however in this case it just doesn't pan out.

Just saying.

I've seen a ton of stutter and some games that are straight up unplayable with the G3258.

Which is why I'd never consider it a proper contender.

Also do you realise that 99% of console users ALSO own a pc? so they have a $350 console and a $300 PC - why not get a $650 pc that you can upgrade - so you dont have to keep buying new PCS or new consoles all the time

Craigslist. Local classifieds are a wonderful thing. :)

The one huge issue I have with these "console killer" PC's is that most of the games have to be played on low. Some games are unplayable, as shown with the graphs you provided a couple posts ago.

With a console I know that when I put in a disc, it'll run. It won't dip down to 4 fps like some of the titles listed.

I imagine the console titles, while not reaching anything comparable to the ultra or high settings of a PC, will at least be at medium. Not low. And a constant 30fps +. Which most of hte titles struggled to accomplish on the budget hardware.

I do plan on building a gaming rig. Just when it makes more sense. SkyLake/Pascal.

I currently have a Samsung Series 9. It does what I need, and even plays most of the games I want to play.

Dude you cannot use USED prices - I could get a PC for $50 and slap a  GPU inside >< could probably even buy a gaming PC used for that price

Not really, since a lot of time the consoles are not playing at 1080p, bur sometihng like 900p up-scaled to 1080p, which is easy for most GPUs, dont forget only 10% of games are THAT demanding

Even AAA titles like COD, CS:GO, BF4 etc will play very easily on medium/high 900/1080p on relatively low end hardware

and exactly you have an ultrabook, for the price of an ultrabook you could get a gaming laptop/pc that does the job of the console AND computer

(I am actually planning to get a PS4 soon but only because exclusives prevent me buying certain games on PC)

Sure I can. That's what I'm buying it for, that's what it costs.

I've looked around at PC's used as well. Nothing comes close to it for the same price. Most people still want $600 for their 4 year old system. And people pay it because there uneducated.

I wouldn't call CS:GO a AAA title. I find it odd that the reviewer didn't use those games in the review, but this one points out the stuttering issues with newer titles like Battlefield 4. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-pentium-g3258-review

Relatively I think would be an i3 or higher. The dual core is just struggin.

I play a console at a further distance than I play on a computer. Probably 4x. So the slight pixel drop isn't as big of a deal to me as if I were sitting right up against the screen.

Yes but I already own the ultrabook ;) I wouldn't sell it for something fatter and harder to carry around. Though I imagine it'll only be a couple years and they'll have sub 3lb gaming beasts.

you CAN play at 1080p 60fps on these if you're willing to compromise settings though. And a lot of people would prefer resolution and framerate over any level of AA or ambient occlusion.

you CAN play at 1080p 60fps on these if you're willing to compromise settings though. And a lot of people would prefer resolution and framerate over any level of AA or ambient occlusion.

SNIP

Price comparisons are always between NEW items, used is not factored in

Sure there are frame deviations on the pentium and on lower end chips but most gamers on low end systems wont care, and they could just vsync to 30fps and play just fine without frame drops

maybe CS:go is not 100% AAA but what I mean is that not all games are demanding like metro last light, games like tomb raider and stuff will play really well

Hell I am playing watch dogs on an 11" gaming laptop with a 650m! and it plays fine :D

There are some very light prett cheap gaming laptops these days like the HP Omen/acer nitro etc at like 4.5lb! which is quite amazing

Desktop - Corsair 300r i7 4770k H100i MSI 780ti 16GB Vengeance Pro 2400mhz Crucial MX100 512gb Samsung Evo 250gb 2 TB WD Green, AOC Q2770PQU 1440p 27" monitor Laptop Clevo W110er - 11.6" 768p, i5 3230m, 650m GT 2gb, OCZ vertex 4 256gb,  4gb ram, Server: Fractal Define Mini, MSI Z78-G43, Intel G3220, 8GB Corsair Vengeance, 4x 3tb WD Reds in Raid 10, Phone Oppo Reno 10x 256gb , Camera Sony A7iii
