Note:

1. This is NOT supposed to be a good looking rig, this rig is made for one purpose only as of now: deliver high performance for production work and some gaming at a reasonable price

2. This rig is bound to change at anytime as some of the parts are used or lower quality due to compromises made to fit the budget

EcBsOCB.jpg

This is my first custom built computer (though I have owned many brand computers before), this will be used mostly for video editing and production works but occasionally for some gaming. Many of the parts chosen here might get replaced very quickly depending on how fast I can save up on some money.

I'll also be reviewing anything from this build that I was able to buy brand new right on the LTT forum (CPU, Mobo, RAM, XP941, NH-D14 SE2011... etc) if theres anything else that you want to see reviewed from this build, I'll be happy to do so if I have the time.

I'm really hoping to be able to finish this build in time for my birthday (I don't technically have a birthday this year but you get the point... some time in the end of February)

YDRjlXZ.jpg

22 January 2015:

I just received the RAM, XP941 SSD, the Thunderbolt expansion card, NH-D14 SE2011 and the mouse in the mail, everything seems intact and ok although I have only unboxed the mouse and redeemed the Steam gift card that came with it. I'll be posting a few pictures of them during the weekends.

A quick picture of what came inside the box, I'll post a few more detailed, cleaner photos later

26 February 2015:

Build Update (26/2/2015):

- I'm extremely sorry for the lack of updates but we have just past one of the biggest holidays in Viet Nam - The Vietnamese New Year, also known as Tet. Tet had also stopped all of my progress on the computer build as every businesses in Viet Nam stopped working.

- That aside, the Tet holiday ended a couple days ago and guess what I received in the mail today !

FnBjHOX.jpg?1

uwaqaNX.jpg?1

It's the motherboard! I haven't removed it from the static bag yet as I don't have a mean of grounding myself right now and I'm very afraid of shocking the board.

From the looks of it right now, it seems to be completely ok. I'll be looking more closely at everything that came in the box tomorrow as I don't really have a lot of time left today.

- Now that Tet is over and everything came back to normal, I'm going to continue my search for a better DSLR to take pictures of the build, my current way of taking pictures are terrible (an Iphone 4 and a Point and Shoot camera). No promises though, I still have no idea of where I can find a DSLR right now but thats not going to stop me from trying  :P

Others:

- Updated some stuff on the first few posts

- I also want to wish everyone a happy new year, I hope everyone will have a great year of the goat! Best wishes!

28 February 2015:

Build Update 28/2/2015:

- I went ahead and checked everything that came in the box except the motherboard (I still dont have anything to ground myself yet) for damage and after a while of carefully inspecting the connecters for damage, the only casualty I found was a few bent header pins on the power led/ speaker/ ground block (I dont actually know what it's called so bear with me). This is a success considering that the motherboard was shipped all the way from the US to Viet Nam (half way around the world) inside 2 boxes with barely enough padding. Of course that I still have to actually check the motherboard for damages too but that comes on another day.

A picture of the connector's damage, this is easily be fixed though:

uyq0QlK.jpg

- On other news, today is technically my birthday for this year although it is more like tomorrow for you guys at the time that I'm writing this (I was born on the 29th of Feb, what are the chances, I know). So happy birthday to me I guess, this rig is kind of the present that I got myself this year (with some help from my parents). I thought that I was able to finish the rig before my birthday but I guess that's not the case. Either way, I'm thankful for this opportunity. I hope that everyone will have just as much fun and luck on this day as me  :)

10 March 2015:

Build Update 10/3/2015:

- I recieved the 2 3TB Toshiba HDD today, I realise that some of you will ask me why am I using surveillance HDD in my workstation rig and my answer to that is that surveillance HDD are usually more reliable than traditional hard drives which suits my purpose, another reason is that I got these drives for much cheaper than what you would usually be able to get in Viet Nam, these were bought in bulk by one of friend's company and he was able to sell me a couple of them at a low price.

- Speaking of pictures, I managed to borrow a camera today, it's a Canon 40D. Expect more pictures for this build in the future. I will try to find a Macro lens since this one (24-105mm 1:4) can't do Macro.

3 April 2015:

Build Update 3/4/2015:

I'm extremely sorry that the build is moving a long so slowly, it was my mid terms so I didn't have time to do anything, thats why the build was kind of on hiatus for so long but fear not, I'm back and I'll try my best to push the build along again, hopefully to the end this time.

--- I'll be adding more content and give updates on the build as soon as theres something new ---

For MAC OS i'd go for a consumer card instead of a workstation card.

It is not decided yet but I'll go with what I can get my hands on and I'm not entire sure that OSX on this rig is even worthwhile yet so we will see

I might start out using only windows and then when Apple decides to provide kernel support then I'll try to use OSX natively

If all hells breaks loose and I can't find a case for the NH-D14 and the CEB board, you might be looking at potential for a custom case but other than that, this is just a build that I'm working on for myself and just so happens to have some time to show it off online

I looked up the parts  and it seems that it'll be a mostly black build...

How about naming it Haguro (羽黒 lit: black feather, named after IJN Haguro which was named after Mt. Haguro, Yamagata Prefecture)?

as for the case, look for something that can house an EATX? (ref: http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/ssi-ceb-question-vs-atx-e-atx.174068/)

I'll add the name into the poll and see what everyone thinks although I'm looking for a name that is: 1. a women/girl's name as my way of naming is quite similar to how you name a ship and 2. if it is something that is meant to be translated into another language, I would prefer for it to look simple (it feels more elegant that way :P) that's why I turned down a lot of other names as I thought they either sounded not very well in my mind or they looked too complexed (written in kanji instead of the simpler kana - although I might be wrong about this, it has been a long time since I stopped learning japanese and chinese, really want to get back into learning japanese though)

As for the case, I can't really just pick any case because I'm in Viet Nam -.-, and shipping from overseas is damn expensive, that delivery yesterday costed almost $150 and it was only 3kg (~6 lbs). I don't think shipping a case here would end very well. I've only seen a few cases here that can accommodate this rig (900D, Cosmos 2 and some 4U cases). I might do an update to the rig once I go abroad to study.

I doubt that will happen

Me too but I feel like if Apple is planning to go X99 anytime soon (I'm sure that they will, they have been doing some overkill shit lately e.g that rumour with the 1 usb-c Macbook Air) then they would have to release a kernel to go with it, I'm counting on the tonymacx86 guys, if not I can always just install it non-natively.

I added the Haguro name as an option, you might want to revote.

I replaced the plain old text I had of the "Summary" and "Progress" section with a few banners I created during my free time on Photoshop, I felt like the presentation of the build wasn't very good so I decided to make that. Please do tell me what you think about it, is it good? bad? too complicated? too simple? If everyone seems to like it then I'll try to do the same thing for other sections.

Update on the build: The motherboard is now in the 3rd party shipping company that I use in the US, I'm expecting it to be delivered in the next 1 or 2 weeks. All the other stuff will be bought here in Viet Nam so I'll try to sort that out ASAP

Build Update:

- I was expecting the motherboard to arrive during this week but we are only a week away from Tet (Vietnamese new year) so it takes forever for stuff to go through customs and apparently it is still stuck in Ho Chi Minh city, I'm hoping that it will be here during the next week.

- sorry for anyone who were expecting more pictures, I tried to take a few pictures last week but they didn't turn out very well so I'm looking into borrowing a DSLR from my friends to hopefully get some better pictures for the thread.

Loving that picture of Chi man.

Awesome how someone is finally using a WS board which is insane in my opinion.

Glad you liked it :)

This machine is intended to be used for creative work and I'm not planning to change my motherboard for the next few years so I needed something reliable with a lot of flexibility and this seems to fit the bill for me. It's also a beautiful looking board which is a added bonus.
