Thoughts on 1440p?

xnoobftw

Do you guys think that this would be the resolution of 2015? Or would you guys think that this resolution would be skipped to 4k?

If so please provide a reason :D

(It would affect whether i buy a 1440p 144hz freesync monitor or a 1080p/4k one)

1440p is in a pretty awkward position  There isn't, and there will never be a significant amount of content in 1440p. Everything else must be scaled. With the industry pushing on 4k, I feel that 1440p has come and gone.

Yeah it is. Apparently Acer is coming out with a 144Hz IPS 1440p G-Sync display sometime this year. I'm not sure if its legit, but it would be amazing.

You may be right about that, but there still isn't enough 4K content. If anything I think this could help make 1440p monitors cheaper and 1440p will become the new 1080p, if you get what I mean. I don't know though, this is all just speculation at the moment. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

No, if it was, we'd be looking at 1440p content & more advertising for them. 4k being so hyped basically means we've already skipped 1440p.

Pretty much everything. That's because 1440p never became a TV standard. Bare in mind a lot of people were reluctant to upgrade to blu ray, many still don't have a full hd tv. It would be hard to justify a further upgrade to 1440p. 4k on the other hand offers a significant enough step forward for people to care.

It seems like 1440p would be more common than it is right now, but just looking at the TV section in best buy would suggest that 1080p is still the dominant resolution. I think 1440p will most likely be skipped and the new resolution standard will be 4k. As technology advances, the poential for higher and higher resolutions becomes greater, and those higher resolutions will become the standard. If you think about it, 4k is still a sort of cutting edge tech, and there aren't a whole lot of early adopters for new tech.

TL;DR:

4k will slowly become the new standard for displays, and 1440p will be the 720p of the future.

The key here is that there WILL BE 4k content. There will never be 1440p content aside from some youtube videos. And in the meanwhile 4k scales both 1080p and 720p perfectly, whereas 1080p on a 1440p screen looks meh.

Do people not realize the people buying 1440p are like us? the 1% of technology users that understand what's actually going on, not the 90+ % of average users.

90% of average users probably don't even know what 1440p is, or understand what resolution is for that matter. These are the type of people that see big numbers and think it's better just because it's bigger. They barely do any research outside of going to the TV or PC store and looking at monitors and picking one that looks nice & is big.

This year may be the year of 1440p for US but sure as hell not for 90% of the people buying new tv's/monitors.

1440p is more of a transition to me, It is not as high as 4k, But it is more than 1080p.
It is lighter to run so it doesnt need as powerful hardware.

So i should skip 1440p and just wait it out till 4k is reasonable in terms of price?

That depends. It's not a decision I would take based on speculation about what "year" this will be... or on what other people are getting.

1080p will stick for 2-3 years ( in developed countries , and 3-5 in other countries ) . Then it will slowly change to 4k which will take another couple of years . 1440p will last until then , when 4k monitors are not 500$+

Yeah, I guess you're sort of right about that, but the problem with 4K, at least on computer monitors, is that you have to have a big enough display so that text and that isn't too small, because Windows doesn't exactly scale that well at the moment. You'd have to have OS X if you wanted to be able to have things scaled correctly and easy to see.

I think 4k is the resolution of 2015 as far as TVs, and some PC monitors etc

but 1440p will definitely be bigger this year
