1080p vs 1440p vs 1600p vs 4k

callmecars

just want to know which can be played with any games at maxed out settings with a reasonable GPU set up (970 SLI for me as an example)

since I'm just transitioning from my PS3 to a powerful PC set up I thought that I could easily max out anything at my old 1080p plasma tv, but I also thought that I might be under utilizing my gear.

I'm guessing the top contenders would be 1440p and 1600p since 4k seems to still need very demanding GPUs to run some AAA games on the verge of ultra (I'm looking at you 980 SLI).

I'd also like to add that I don't care about 120hz or 144hz and such, I'm pretty much okay with 60hz for now while maintaining a great gaming experience that looks good (I'm eyeing Dell monitors, which are known to be of good visual quality), and also to add the fact that I'll be video editing so I'll need color accuracy and such more than the high refresh rates.

970 SLI is capable of powering 4k, but depending on the game you may not get a solid 60fps with ultra settings.

The Asus PB279Q is probably the best deal for 4K IPS.

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow; Motherboard: MSI ZZ490 Gaming Edge; CPU: i7 10700K @ 5.1GHz; Cooler: Noctua NHD15S Chromax; RAM: Corsair LPX DDR4 32GB 3200MHz; Graphics Card: Asus RTX 3080 TUF; Power: EVGA SuperNova 750G2; Storage: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB; Crucial M500 240GB & MX100 512GB; Keyboard: Logitech G710+; Mouse: Logitech G502; Headphones / Amp: HiFiMan Sundara Mayflower Objective 2; Monitor: Asus VG27AQ

For a 970 SLI you should max most games at 1440p. Not sure about 1600p.

If you run into a game that doesnt benefit from or support SLI, then fat luck.

You can near max a lot of games in 1600p with one 970 without AA

Example, I played bf4 singleplayer at 1600p with no AA max settings otherwise and it ran great 80-90 fps plus.

So a 970 SLI setup should give a great performance at 1440p or 1600p

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

the only thing I'm worried about 1440p is when newer games come out and the 970 SLI won't get to do ultra settings on them anymore without sacrificing fps.

I was also worried about the SLI support which is why I made a different post about a week ago asking on that, and most of the people here said that the games that would probably require the extra SLI horsepower would support SLI

You might like the Asus PB278Q--it has a 1440p IPS panel, but the response time is 5ms which may have a ghosting effect during gaming.

Yah looked grea. However it was a 30 inch panel, and I wasn't sitting at a desk. So your experience may differ.

You mean this?

post-14986-0-67018800-1421310203.jpg

It's got decently thinner bezel than the PB278Q. It utilises a, now common, AHVA (Advanced Hyper Viewing Angle) IPS-like display. I don't think it's released yet, but obviously soon.

970 sli can do 1080, 1440, and 1600 ultra at 60 FPS on most all games, 4K it can play most games at ultra but it might dip below 60FPS depending on the game,

so are you giving the answer for 1440p? and I'm already eyeing the Dell U2713H for 1440p since here in the Philippines there are some that sell it for half the price of the Asus PB278Q because it came from Japan or something (I'm not really sure why it's cheap but I'll test it to see if there isn't anything fishy about it)

thanks now that's a definite & clear answer that I was looking for! how much of a difference is there between the 1440p and 1600p? and how about the lifespan of the 970 SLI, meaning in probably a year or two would the new games released still be playable at the same settings for 1440p and 1600p? or the higher resolution of the 1600p force me to step down the settings? I'm really taking all this into consideration and just want the best bang for my buck

There's always the BenQ GW2765HT. It's quite a good monitor and TFT Central has done a review and testing of it.

Have a look: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/content/benq_gw2765ht.htm#intro

1440P is a 16:9 aspect ratio, 1600P is a 16:10, 16:10 is a more "professional" ratio, used for editing and such. 970 SLI should be good for another 2-3 years with how games are going at this rate.
