Best AMD Cpu vs Intel i7 980

Spev

Just wondering how the best AMD multicore CPU would compare to an Intel i7980 (not 980x), it's in my 2nd PC.

Current PC build: [CPU: Intel i7 8700k] [GPU: GTX 1070 Asus ROG Strix] [Ram: Corsair LPX 32GB 3000MHz] [Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A] [SSD: Samsung 970 EVO 500GB primary + Samsung 860 Evo 1TB secondary] [PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 750w 80plus] [Monitors: Dual Dell Ultrasharp U2718Qs, 4k IPS] [Case: Fractal Design R5]

Not a single one since the IPC of the FX is lower than the I7-980

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

I would guess they would be neck in neck

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Well I am considering selling it and building an AMD system for streaming/ video editing, and stuff like that. The AMD CPUs are pretty cheap so honestly I could probably sell this and not spend much at all to trade.

I don't believe a single AMD FX CPU can beat the 980.

the i7 980 beats any amd fx cpu both in single thread and multithread performance . and it overclocks very good .amd is absent in the high end cpu market

An 9xxx series CPU will beat it but not by much and it consumes ungodly amounts of power so not worth it. Sandy Bridge was like a 30% IPC increase so the gap between AMD and intel is smaller here, but it still exists.

Well it's not the unlocked (980x) version so I'm not sure how well it would overclock. I'm pretty new to manual overclocking but I heard it's difficult on the 980 (not 980x).

The 980 is better at stock in single threaded and multithreaded performance than a 8320, don't waste your time and money.

Yeah I'm not using this one for gaming though. More for rendering/editing. I know that the AMDs bottleneck GPUs in some games but I'm not using this for gaming. Render times/productivity is what I'm looking at. I figured a newer 8 core would be better...

FX-8370 i guess. With a good cooler they can overclock well

Cores don't matter when you're not directly comparing apples to apples; like FX-6300 vs FX-8350 for example.

Core 2 duos beat FX in single threaded performance at the same clock speed...

Of course it matters...

He thinks a 8350 is possibly better because it has 8 cores, but it's not.

What he is doing though should be able to make use of the extra cores (*should*). Of course though there is always the issue with power consumption when you have an AMD FX CPU, they make my Xeon look like its a welter weight even though it has the same TDP.

Yes I know, but it doesn't matter when the 8 cores of the 8350 are still <= i7 980 in multithreaded applications

The total IPC for productivity in the i7 980 still higher than in a FX... not to forget to mention that he'll also get advantage of HTT

My Xeon in the only time I had it stable at 4GHz (unstable 3+1 phase VRM and cooling issues) was faster overall than the FX 8350 my Core 2 Duo beat in single threaded performance (the E8500 was at 4GHz, with the 8350 limited to 4 cores). Which as usual shows that AMDs direction with the FX line was a step backwards. And I had forgotten about the hyperthreading on i7s since I've never actually even touched a computer that uses one. (i5s are a lot more common).

I think the fx would be a little bit stronger but as soon as you move up 2700k the i7 wins again

the 980 is neck and neck with a 8350

980 single core speed is 1443

8350 is 1508

at stock ofcourse.

the 980 however will still slightly outperform the 8350 (by 3-5%)

however when both overclocked the 980 will  get faster single core speed and then it beats the 8350 in everything but not by much.

the 980 was a $600 cpu at one time

cpu:i7-4770k    gpu: msi reference r9 290x  liquid cooled with h55 and hg10 a1     motherboard:z97x gaming 5   ram:gskill sniper 8 gb
