Theory: Is it possible to air-cool 220W TDP?

paradonym

Just in theory (or probably with an example):

No matter of silence - Is it possible to air-cool an AMD FX-9590 (or any other 220W TDP CPU) and still have ressources to overclock the CPU?

If it's possible how would you do it? What coolers and fans and components would you use?

There is a cooler that allows you to overclock the 9590?

There are enough possibilities to cool a thing like this, if you want to do some work yourself.

air-cooling is a tricky one tho. You can make a custom cpu block with copper pipes that lead to other blocks where you can mount huge air-coolers. Silly solution but if you really want to keep it air-cooled and don't care about anything else, this is probably what you should do.

If air-cooling isn't a must, you can do some other things like:

An expensive enough custom WC loop will keep it cool enough, even with an overclock.

Or a wc system with TEC cooling, or phase change cooling :P Options enough! If money isn't an issue of course.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

If your looking at a. FX 95xx, don't becuase it voids the warrantty. It'll also take a super powerful motherboard to handle the high TDP.

But breaking warranties is fun! Check the dark rock pro 3 out: http://www.bequiet.com/en/cpucooler/482. It can handle up to 250 watts.

Edit: Fore more overclocking headroom, use 2x of the Noctua Industrial PPC 3000RPM NF-F12. They move a heck of a lot of air.

If we are able to air cool engines which produce way more than 220W of TDP then a CPU is a piece of cake

Asrock 890GX Extreme 3 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 @3.50GHz - Arctic Cooling Freezer XTREME Rev.2 - 4GB Kingston HyperX - AMD Radeon HD7850 - Kingston V300 240GB - Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - Chieftec APS-750 - Cooler Master HAF912 PLUS

Being able to air-cool 250W TDP doesn't mean that this is made to cool that... having a silent cooler at 250W TDP is the trick :D - not a Dark Rock pro 3 at maximum RPM

It's pretty darn quiet! 26.1 dBa (according to product page) at 100% fan speed.

Sure. With a noctua nh-d15 ANYTHING can be cooled at stock and even overclocked a bit. Just ramp up the fan RPM. Or swap the already excellent fans with the 3000 rpm version.

-edit-

or dem freaking delta fans if noise is 100% not an issue ^^

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
