Google to FCC: if the internet is a Title II utility, let us expand Fiber

9699481278_9b235c40c9.jpg

Verizon famously said that if the FCC heeds President Obama's urging and declares the internet a Title II utility, it would cause "great harm to an open Internet, competition and innovation." But exactly the opposite of that may happen, according to a letter from Google to the FCC. Mountain View pointed out that if broadband internet access is declared to be a Title II service, then Google Fiber should be granted the same access as other utilities to poles and other essential infrastructure. It went on to say that doing so would actually "promote broadband deployment and competition."

Nice! I hope this allows Google to fuck up all those shitty ISP's, and also roll out Google Fiber in other countries (Netherlands please, we also have quite shitty ISP's in some areas)

well, then wouldn't that make the statement from verizon true?

Google is technically competition for Verizon.

if all companies had access to others infrastructures for a fair price (eg a set operating fee that covers the yearly maintenance on that infrastructure) then you would see real competition and lower prices.

I sure hope FCC will listen to the consumer on this one and that they wont be paid off by the Telecom companies.

And here I was under the impression Google really didn't want to play ISP... This is shaping up to be one interesting year.

That's exactly how it is in England and while we don't have super up to date tech here we do have a good range of services at a good range of prices. Its much better here than in USA

yep, although the reason we dont have too great a service is dues to a few reasons, but both virgin and bt have been competing with each other offering lower costs and fibre lines

I don't care if it's 1 GB, if I can lower my internet bill (I am paying around $80 for 18/2) I will be more than satisfied with google mining all the porn i watch.

I think it is more along the lines of "stop with your bullshit and start doing your jobs, or we will put you out of business". Google definitely has the cash to do it too.

I wouldn't be surprised if there comes a lawsuit against Google if they impede on other's "territory."

We need that here in Australia. Telstra has the widest coverage, but the highest prices (part government owned). And then there is Optus with less coverage and an overloaded network due to their cheaper prices. As far as I know all other ISP have to pay line rental, so if Google started rolling out fiber here (in other words finishing the NBN as it were) Telstra might get their heads out of their asses.

Google, force your market. Seriously. We have more than a need for this, what with modern education (at least up here in the north). Our curriculum is online and we are using sub-par internet in order to access google drive and netflix for documentary-based lessons. Oh, and a lot of quizzes are online.

If the US gov knew how the US needed this technology, they'd have given it to us long ago. I'm glad google zipped up it's big-boy pants and is telling them who's the boss around here.

Google is powered by it's userbase. Everyone knows and loves google. Nobody I know of has an issue with google fiber coming in. I'm more than eagerly waiting for it. Hell, I dug out my old power mac g4 with gigabit LAN just to see if I can reach le gigabit speed with the old fucker.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_carrier to be a common carrier/provider of connection services, or transferring/carrying goods. Basically a necessity.

What does that mean for the Internet? (what will happen to it,..) More regulation?
