So somebody has been working on a new program known as Dimmdrive. Designed for Windows 7, 8 and 10, this software acts, essentially, as a RAMdisk, but only for the select programs you tell it to load into memory, rather than loading an entire operating system. This is mainly being targeted at gamers but is also viable for other programs as well. In short, it will load an entire application into memory (should you have the space for it) almost completely removing loading times caused by the CPU waiting for data to be sent from a hard drive and even a solid state drive, which eliminates texture pop-in and lag spikes in games as well as I/O bottlenecks.

Select files in a program can be loaded into the memory if it is too large, or the whole program can be loaded and assigned a drive letter. Dimmdrive integrates with Steam to allows games to launch easily and quickly.

Personally I think this is really cool software and almost completely removes the need for an SSD for storing games that need to load quickly. Simply have a small boot SSD, a large HDD and then give yourself 16-32GB of RAM and you can achieve read speeds of up to 13,000MB/s (reported numbers from the creator of the program).

He is currently doing a giveaway on reddit for those interested. The program will, on January 1st, be available to download on Steam for $34.

How does this work? Is it a con?

i believe when you launch a game it loads it into a ram disk and when you exit the game it deletes the ram disk.

RAMDisk has been around for a while. AMD have an implementation, even.

However, this is the first time I've seen it created when needed when a program launches.

Seems pretty cool.

My favourite game (Planetary annhilation) would either run worse due to less ram or better due it the game actually being in the ram. Trying it out asap.

Who could possibly have anything less than 64GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum 2800 MHz RAM???!!!

I mean, you're not even a real enthusiast unless you have 2 of these anyway.

When DDR4 comes to the consumer platform and 16GB DIMMs become fairly standard, this type of software will become more and more relevant.

Remember, 8GB of RAM to someone in the 1960s would be ridiculous

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - CPU Cooler: Deepcool Castle 240EX - Motherboard: MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC

1960s? Even 10 years ago people would say a consumer is insane for having 8GB of memory. It's really only been a couple years since 8GB was starting to be recommended for enthusiast gamers.

But then you do get those 50GB games.

It's difficult to realize how much 50gb really is. I was reminded just yesterday when I got COD Advanced Warfare as a gift. The thing was 6 discs of DVD's. I remember when CD's were enough to store a game

Finally my Santa hat doesn't look out of place
