Samsung releases 11.8mm thick Series 9 2015 (Core M, Retina, 3.5mm jack!)

dizmo

Samsung has unveiled the new revised Series 9 laptop, their top of the line ultrabook.

It's called the Samsung Series 9 2015 Edition, and it looks like a very solid step forward for the line.

The ultrabook is a mere 11.8mm thick, and weighs in at only 950 grams (about 2 lbs).

It features a 12.2" 2560x1600 700 nit Adaptive Display.

Loaded with 8gb of RAM, a 256gb SSD, and the Intel Core M 5Y10c with Intel HD 5300 Graphics clocked at 800/1000 mhz (up to 2ghz with Turbo boost) it should be able to handle quite a bit including mid level gaming.

Battery life is claimed to be 12 hours, which is impressive to say the least.

It also steals a few features from it's cellular division, including the Ultra Power Saving Mode from the S5/Note 4, as well as the pattern unlock.

Pricing for the 4GB RAM 256GB SSD model is $1200, while the model with 8GB of RAM will run you $1,400. A bit of a gouge there if you ask me, I'd like to have seen some other improvements for that $200 difference.

I wonder how this will compare to the new Macbook Air.

But, so thin, does it give up it's headphone jack like some savvy competitors?

Oh! Hello, old friend.

Personal Thoughts

I'm pretty stoked on this, actually. I have a Series 9 as well, however it's an older model; a whole 2.5lbs, and 14.9mm thick. It's such a pig! *sarcasm*

I am interested though, as I think this is more of a competitor to a tablet than most. I mean honestly, if you look at a 12" tablet, or this 12.2" ultrabook, it's pretty obvious which one will be more productive.

The only worry I have is keyboard feel. I mean the one I currently have feels fine, and honestly has more than enough travel. However as laptops keep getting thinner, that's the one thing I really worry about.

The 12 hour battery life impresses me. My current model is rated at something like 8 or 9 hours, but I can get a solid 6 out of it (browsing, wifi on, slightly higher than low brightness), so this one should be able to get a full work day pretty easily.

I know, I know. "If it was a little thicker they could have fit in an even bigger battery!!!"

Funny, I don't recall seeing a price.

Also, saying it's too expensive and then comparing it to a MacBook Pro is comical. ;)

Ah yes, for Europe.

Just one market it would seem.

I like their design, just a shame it runs on a Mac OS.

The Samsungs actually feel very premium as well, having an aluminium lid.

There is some plastic, but honestly if it helps keep the weight down a little and it's of solid, high quality I'm perfectly fine with that.

Its 1200$ for the 4gb ram and 1400$ for 8gb, and since the macbook is 1300$ with 8gb ram and more powerful cpu, I see no reason why someone should get the samsung

not sure which specific MB are you refering to but if its the air, this thing has a 2560x1600 display that is most likely ips somthing much much better that the higher that 720p tn the air has, also i think the retina MB start close to 2k$ IIRC

Edit: the mbpr does start at 1300$ though that's for 128gb the 256gb one is almost 1500$

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

Im talking about the Pro, which has the same resolution ips display, and IMO more ram>more storage

1) Smaller, thinner, lighter

2) Windows over Mac

3) Longer battery life

4) Better graphics option (the new one will be different, but it's not on their site)

The MacBook Air, similarly spec'd is the same price. There is no advantage in that regard.

not sure which specific MB are you refering to but if its the air, this thing has a 2560x1600 display that is most likely ips somthing much much better that the higher that 720p tn the air has, also i think the retina MB start close to 2k$ IIRC

Probably PLS, which is still a very nice display.

Probably not, but you're the only one who wasted his time to make an absolutely pointless post about it.

The rest logically carried on to other things.
