Will 2015 be the year of 4K?

SSOB

IMO It will. Mediamarkt already sells 4K TV's for  500-1000 euros which is a nice price-point.

http://www.mediamarkt.nl/mcs/productlist/Televisies,10259,450691.html?langId=-11&searchParams=%2FSearch.ff%3FfilterTabbedCategory%3Donlineshop%26filterCategoriesROOT%3DBeeld%2B%2526%2BGeluid%25C2%25A7MediaNLnlc450681%26filterCategoriesROOT%252FBeeld%2B%2526%2BGeluid%25C2%25A7MediaNLnlc450681%3DTelevisie%2B%2526%2Bprojectie%25C2%25A7MediaNLnlc450682%26filterCategoriesROOT%252FBeeld%2B%2526%2BGeluid%25C2%25A7MediaNLnlc450681%252FTelevisie%2B%2526%2Bprojectie%25C2%25A7MediaNLnlc450682%3DTelevisies%25C2%25A7MediaNLnlc450691%26filterUltra%2BHD%3DJa%252C%2B4K%26channel%3Dmmnlnl%26disableTabbedCategory%3Dtrue%26navigation%3Dtrue&sort=&view=&page=

4K gaming will all depend on the R9 390X I think. If that card can run AAA titles 4K res at 40-60FPS on High-Ultra many people will make the switch

Also 4K IPS panels are really starting to come down in price a lot.( From prices like 3K last year to a still steep but more comfortable 600 euros) Such as this one:

http://www.redcoon.nl/B508487-Dell-UltraSharp-UP2414Q-LED-IPS_Monitoren?channel_code=57&product_code=91756812&refId=bvdo

And if you don't mind using a TN panel a 4K monitor can be had for as little as 380 euros  Which isn't a lot considering that it will drop a lot more in price in 2015.

Also Windows 10 will finally have proper 4K support.

Altogether I think that a lot of people will switch to 4K this year.

Nope. If anything 1440p.

I completely disagree on this one. We will skip 1440P entirely I think.

Lol, your hardware is more than capable of running 4K. Or aren't you referencing yourself?

We didn't skip 1080p when 720p was the norm back then, what makes you think 4K will be any different?

4K tvs are already dead cheap compared to anything else in 4k, and in our house, the projector is dying and really sucks. We considered getting a 4k tv this year, and probably will next year.

I already have a lovely new 1080p 60hz monitor with great colors(ips), and will only upgrade when 120hz 4k or 60hz 4k ips becomes affordable(about 300usd)

A good sign to notice ''the year of thing'' is when mainstream stores and mainstream marketing is advertising a certain thing.

NOPE

4K won't be a standard until people can buy it for at most 110-130% of the price of an 1080p TV. The average user won't care unless it's within reach; only those into high-end gaming or who somehow just love watching content not scaled for your display will buy them. We still don't have much 4K content, and most compuers sold today can't handle it regardless. Even HDMI isn't properly updated for it yet!

So, no.

aha, I compeletly disagree then. 4k is still to expensive to get for the majority and the cheaper monitors have issues here and there which is noticeable...

No..

1. consoles and TV broadcasting is not in 4K (or 1080p sometimes..)

2. everyone is still making 1080p build, so I don't see why they would change to 4K all of the sudden...

4K is not close IMHO. I think 2016 will be the year for 4K (and maybe 2015 the year of 1080p+. So still 1080, but also 1440p)

For it to get really popular the average gamer needs to be able to drive the resolution with a ~$300 GPU. Until then it will continue to be a niche market.

Full HD and HD Ready were things back then. There isn't an official logo and ''marketing'' name for 1440P like there is with 1080/2160/720P. I mean things like this:

That's already the case? At least here in the netherlands the AVG is about 140% of the price of a good 1080P TV. In 2015 this of course will come down to your suggested price range.

I agree, if you think what hardware you need to drive 4k at a decent frame rate, this is so out of reach for 90% of users, there also isn't the content available or optimised to run on lesser hardware

The way I see things 1440p will replace 1080p, and prices will be proportional kinda like this.

720p - 1080p -1440p - 4K

   |             |          |          |

  $=          $=       $=      $=

   |             |          |          |

1080p -1440p - 4K - (5K?)

But what if a 4K monitor is only 30% more expensive ( Which it already is.) Will you be considering 4K then?

I don't have the GPU power to run a 4k monitor. I don't even think I would be happy with 2 r9 290's at 4k.
