Macbook Pro with a GTX 980 Setup Guide & Benchmarks [eGPU setup, Windows 10]

Firearm2112

That's not for macs. To get the full speed on a Mac you need the Akitio. That solution works great for windows pcs.

Thanks a lot man. I always love to try something different, and hopefully one day companies will sell full enclousure like this for anyone to use.

Haha good joke about Apple man! You think they are going to stop ripping people off? Ain't gunna happen :P

@Firearm2112 Nice!

Also, you bought a 980!?!? Wow. Now I suggest putting it in a M-ITX case... It would make everything so much cleaner...

They are the first company to actually make a contained unit. How good it will be? We will have to wait until it comes out.

I like that! eGPU should be a more used consept for gaming notebooks. Something like a docking station where you slide your slime notebook in as soon as you'r home which connects to a monitor, bam, your gaming pc is set to go.

The price is 299.

The Mac setup I have is 200 for the akitio and 30 for the PSU so it's actually cheaper lol.

It should. All you'll need is an Nvidia card to use the iMac's built in screen and Windows 8.1

Sadly, it is not that easy. You would have to somehow disable the R9 290M in the firmware/bios (Apple Machine, have fun :D) because for Optimus to work (to get an image to the built-in screen) you only want the Intel HD graphics to run. Otherwise you can only get an image to an external monitor. So I don't think this is possible on the 5K iMac, but it is definitely possible on the other iMacs, especially the ones using Iris graphics only...

I have the lid closed which is the main issue, since MacBooks draw some fresh air from the keyboard.

Thanks man, if you do invest in one, you got the easiest machine! A Mac Mini!

I kinda hate windows right now. Windows 8.1 flipped shit and deleted a bunch of my stuff on the OS drive, and Windows 7 isn't Windows 8. And to give you an idea...

-snip-

So, you had Windows 8 installed and some how you ended up with a Windows 7 skin.

How did you install Windows? Through bootcamp right? If I remember correctly, when installed under Bootcamp, OSX tells windows to not even touch it.  Thats crazy. If you are going to go with an eGPU, I highly recommend you do a fresh install of Windows 8.1. Windows 7 got some issues.

No. Windows 8 flipped shit so I installed Windows 7.

Also, this is on my rig, you silly billy.

I just wish I had a Mac Mini. Also, with Safari on your Mac, do you get a "browser no longer supported" message on a GDoc? Here's one of mine just so you don't have to go and hunt one down. http://bit.ly/AthenaUpgrades.

And one more thing: Have you ever used an Apple HDMI cable? I had thought about getting one, since they look fairly small and maneuverable, and shmexy. Not sure on the durability, basically. If it's anything like the 30-pin cables like with the iPad 2... They're not that impressive.

Oh lol.

I dont really use safari, I prefer chrome. But, I did use Safari in OSX for about a year, and I did get this message once, but solves it by clearning the cache of Safari.

I have never used an Apple HDMI cable. When I felt it in store it seemed very flimsy. It is sexy though. I'm sure it would work just fine. I use some HDMI cable I got at radio shack but I really like it since its gold plated and quite good quality.

I hate to say it, but I'm finding a new spot in my heart for Safari. Even with my bandwidth pretty much gone with Steam hogging most of it up right now (4.2-4.3MB/s out of 4.5MB/s), it's still really snappy. And I kinda like the little loading bar that pops up in the address bar when you load a page. Just nice to have, and kinda makes the UI nicer.

It runs ALOT better on OSX compared to Windows, just saying. Sorta like how on iPhones, safari will always be a bit snappier compared to other mobile browers because of Apple only allowing safari to use more efficient coding or something like that. I might go back to it one day.

Yup. I think if I do get a Mac, the default browser will never get changed. xD
