Should I let my little brother play gta 5?

farhanorakzai

So I bought my 9 year old brother a ps4 on black Friday, turns out that it came with gta 5. I told him that he couldn't play it because he's too young, but he started crying and saying that all his friends play it and he doesn't want to be left out. I don't want to be the bad guy and deprive him of playing with his friends. Should I let him play it? How bad/graphic is the game(haven't played it, waiting for pc version)

If he knows that he shouldn't do the things he does in the game, in real life. Then I don't see a problem with it. My parents let me plat GTA at that age.

I know he won't do those things in real life, but most gta games have a lot of sexual content that I'm not sure he should see

Talk to your parents, and have them talk with him about it.

My sister has it and it does have a bucketload of swearing in it. It can also be quite violent. So it depends on whether or not you want your brother to be exposed to that or not. Personally, I wouldn't allow him, maybe when he's 15 - 18 years old, but not at 9. Bu that's just my opinion, you can take it or leave it.

I can't talk to my parents about it because they'll give him whatever he wants. The game could literally have porn in it and they would let him play it to stop his crying

how old is he?

OP says 9

You need to talk to your parent(s) or Guardian(s) as they are the only ones that have the right to say if he can play it or not.

Personally I wouldn't let my Children play it until they are over 12 or 13, and even then they wouldn't be allowed to play it without my supervision until they were 18.

In my personal opinion, he's just gonna see it anyways, but talk with your parents without him explain what's in it. Ask for their opinion on it and then come up with a decision.

Talk to your parents, tell them whats in the game and let them decide. It should be their decision and they should see whats in the game to be sure they understand what he would be seeing.

why don't you let him play online and single player but only for roaming around. Not story missions, etc. That way if there's any sexual content, he won't see it.

my main problem with letting a 9yo play gta5 is the stealing of cars and the targeted killing of cops personally i wouldn't let him play till  at least 12-13. tho if you decide to let him play you should all ways be there

Play with him. He plays, you watch. Maybe do turns in playing, try to blow up shit. Don't do the missions, that's where the sexual content etc. that he shouldn't see lies imo.

I played CnC Tiberian Sun and GTA 2 at the age of 7 an i am totally fine. :)

who cares...

My bro is 8 and I would let him play, simply because he can distinguish between real life and a game and does not get sucked in. Both me and my brother have grown up in a house hold that looks down upon saying words like "crap", let alone misbehaviour. So we never feel the need to swear or do anything wrong. If I were you though, I wouldn't let him play, simply because you have concers and worry, and since you know him better than us all, I'd say your worry is justified and you take the necessary action to keep him safe.

Comb it with a brick

Well can your kid distinguish what's normal in games from what's normal IRL? If so, let him play but supervised. If not, don't let him play.

There's a lot of bad language, particularly racial slurs and stereotypes. The way women are portrayed is also something you'd not want a kid to think is how it is or should be. There's one particularly unpleasant torture scene that made me (and quite a few others) feel quite uncomfortable.

I personally wouldn't let a 9 year old play it.

No offence, but if he's crying because it told him he couldn't play, he is indeed too young.

Just give him some appropriate games, it's not the end of the world.

So many things I could write here... things like this.

I wouldn't; it would be better just to wait until he's about 13 and then he will probs be okay to play.

There is an age rating for a reason, and even though people on this forum feel otherwise, children should not be playing games with close-up scenes of gore, sexual content or extreme swearing.

I started playing stuff like CoD 4 when I got my PS3 a long time ago (I must have been 12/13) and those kinds of games were fine. There isn't really mindless violence in call of duty and anyone with half a brain can tell that it's all in the spirit of fun. However, games like Grand Theft Auto and others with senseless violence, over the top swearing and stuff like that are not okay for children to be playing. Even at the age of 17, I find myself swearing more whenever I play a game which features swear words regularly. Since in my sixth form and workplace, swearing is really bad, I find it best to avoid such games.

EDIT:

After seeing the "He's Crying" post, I must rapidly conclude that he will have to wait until he is old enough to play them, he must be able to accept that he is wrong. He must also have to be able to see the other point of the argument.

Well crying after being told no isn't exactly a sign of maturity. I would say no, but I guess tell his parents about it and show them the esrb rating.
