Raspberry pi laptop-netbook project

I was thinking of using a banana pi which is much more powerful but i want that community backup that i have with the raspberry pi. A friend of mine is waiting for his banana pi and if it is any good, I might get one and use that instead.  

I have looked into the Banana Pi after hearing that it was more powerful. It has more USB ports, an onboard SATA port and a stronger ARM processor. I heard that support for the Banana Pi is patchy at best right now and it doesn't seem to offer much improvement over the well supported Pi after finding problems and tinkering. I would personally stick with the Pi, expecially for a daily use scenario, you will run into less issues overall and the support community is vast.

 

I don't really know what sort of battery would be best, but have you looked at Li-ion? What size of battery were you thinking of using?

Yep thats exactly the reason I dont want to go to another single board computer like the banana pi. Because it might seem more powerful and stuff but if there is noone there to support it then its useless for me. I looked at li ion, lipo and lifo as @Scheer said above but although the li fo seem safer, they lack in capacity and availability as far as i can see.. I was thinking about a 6000mah lipo pack consisting of two 3000mah batteries in parallel but as I have read its not that easy to handle and i need to be extremely careful when using them or charging them. I was also considering buying a 18650  pack like the ones adafruit sells but they seem to be quiet big in size.

maybe an odd idea... but why not use a usb battery bank as a power source, it can be pretty small and it already has the dc dc circuitry, also it has a proper charging circuit so you won't blow up your battery :P

Yeah i thought about that too but i cant find a good and small one here on greece.. That was actually my first plan before i discovered that they dont really sell here...and i dont deel safe buying online as there are a lot of fake ones. If you guys can link me to some reliable online stores that are located in europe(shipping cant be more expensive than the battery itself) i would really appreciate it :)

Barnacules made a video review of the Vivis Knight V3 USB battery pack. It looks pretty good with a 13AH battery, but might not be available where you are.

So I started working and desoldered almost everything from the raspberry pi! It is now much MUCH thinner than it was before and to my surprise it still boots and works perfectly fine! Now its the lcd controllers turn to get every bulky thing desoldered! 

BTW I will remove the capacitor and the onboard voltage regulator as well as the usb power port as i will power the pi from the gpio pins

Just a quick update. While desoldering some lvds headers from the screen controller I ripped 2 contacts and the display would not work properly after that. After some close investigations it seemed like the headers where needed to complete the circuit so i soldered them but 2 of them had no contacts on them. So I used an xacto knife to scratch the coating of where the connections where and used the tiniest tip on my soldering iron to bridge them and surprisingly it worked with the first try. Also the hdmi input jack arrived :D

Also I will have a lot more time to work on it now on holidays because right now i have very little free time.

you can also spot 2 other destroyed contacts.. these where ground and where not needed to complete the circuit so i just left them like that

You're pretty far along in the project and I doubt you want to change up the components, but I recently found out about this and figured I'd show it to you: http://www.adafruit.com/products/2231

At .6mm pitch it would be near impossible to solder all of those pins tho... You'd have to make a PCB and solder paste it, but you could design the PCB so all the jacks were in the perfect spot. It would be really cool, but a ton of work, just wanted to throw it out there.  :P

Yeah i saw that module somewhere before and at first i though it was a ram upgrade for the raspberry pi :P thanks for the link I now know exactly what this is. Sad news is that i cant solder a ddr2 socket and i dont have the equipment to do so but it would be a lot smarter to use that if i had the right tools.

I ordered all the components i think i will need along with a xiaomi 10400mah 5v battery bank for the main battery and some voltage regulators.  I also created a 3d design of what the actually laptop might look like on the inside. Because the batteries are a little big, I had to compensate and create a small portion at the back. I know it wont look that good but at least i will have all that battery capacity. Now it would been perfect if i had a 3D printer handy to print the outer case but unfortunately I dont.... So thats what i am gonna need to figure next, how to made the case. Also I started working on the hdmi cable and so far so good I just need to make the case first to cut the wires where needed. As for a mouse pointer, I am going to be using ether an trackball from blackberry phone hooked up as a HID using an arduino or an analog stick from a psp. I am have not decided yet. I am also making a circuit to completely turn off the raspberry pi and start everything up with the press of a button.

The bubbles are there to protect it in case I drop it :P joking. its actually a screen protector and obviously i applied it wrong. And this is actually a usb mini keyboard i got from a tablet stand like this one:

take apart a usb hub and put the pcb in the labtop, done

exactly what i will do :P

Sooooo I know i havent posted any updates here..... I will be honnest....I forgot to :P .... a lot of things happen... I got a raspberry pi model B 2. I have a battery and everything. I have it actually working. All it needs now is an enclosure. More info and photos will be available once school stops so that i will have more free time to work on it. The whole casing will be from aluminum BTW.

So. I totally forgoten about my post here :P sorry for the guys that follow it. Anyway. Iv been working hard on this raspberry pi laptop and I have made HUGE progress over the last few days. It is like 90% complete. Its been a long time since I updated here so lets go. 

I got everything. I made a new more rubost hdmi cable, designed my power delivery system, tested it, I went agead and bought some aluminum sheets(1mm thick) and started working.

So far so good. Everything works so far. Wifi works, speakers work, screen works, ethernet works, the usb hub works, the card reader works, they keyboard works, the batteries I hope they work and now almost everything electronic is mounted on the case and its usable. My real problem right now is the screen hingle. I have no idea how to make one that actually has friction and works like a regular laptop hingle. Any help would be apreciated. 


BY THE WAY.

You might look at it and " you need to sand it you need to paint it "......I will not paint it. I will putt a vynal wrap all around it. I am thinking about white carbon fiber i think it looks sick.
