Analog's Project RRH (Red Riding Hood)

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

My new build, replacing the current X79 rig, is beginning to take shape. The only essential part that is missing is the motherboard, but I will order that probably after New Years eve. As stated in Update 1 of the log the RAM has arrived and you check out the full spec of the parts that I have and all of the other miscellaneous bits and peaces that I still need to acquire.

Specs:

- CPU: Intel Core i7 5960X

- CPU: Cooler: Corsair H110

- MBO: ASRock Fatal1ty X99M Killer

- RAM: Geil Evo Potenza 4x4GB Quad-Channel 3000MHz DDR4 kit (the 3200MHz one was currently out of stock, so sad)

- GPU: Asus MARS 760x2 4GB

- SSD: 2x Samsung 256GB 830 Series

- HDD: WD 750GB Blue Drive

- PSU: Cooler Master ProM 1000W

- Case: Corsair Obsidian 350D

I have ordered some  thick noise-isolation and more LED strips. Still haven't decided on the decals though. I really wanted some to have the front of the case in glossy piano white with a red RRH logo, but we will see how that goes.

Ideas and suggestions are welcome!

Subscribe for updates! :)

For the mobo i suggest the gigabyte mx gaming 5 x99 (200 euros).  It has 2 x usb 3.0 pin out headers :P

As for the RAM, a 32GB kit of the cheapest (probs) crucial memory. All other ddr4 memory is WAY overpriced.

Can you send me a link to that board, I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Update N1:

The parts are starting to arrive. At first I was thinking of cheeping out on the RAM, but after some consideration I decided to go all the way and I ordered what I consider the best 16GB kit with a red heat spreader and black PCB - the Geil Evo Potenza 4x4GB Quad-Chanel DDR4 kit rated at 3000MHz. Geil also has a 3200MHz kit, but that was out of stock on the website, were I wanted to order so... I got this. Pics attached below.

I have also ordered a couple of white LED strips and some nice thick noise-dampening material to put on the non-windowed side panel of the case, around the radiator at the top and at the floor around the HDD cages and PSU.

check that EVGA board again. It should have a  USB 3.0.

On the bottom side (not the right as most motherboards)

Unfortunately EVGA's site does not work for me right now.

X99 micro has USB 3.0

Yes I saw it after that, but from what I read online the overclocking on that board is terrible. The pink chokes also look hideous! I don't know who had that stupid idea... I will most likely go with the ASRock X99m Killer, it looks better, its cheaper and has all of the features I want. Best of all, it has the most overbuilt PWM of any X99m boards out there with its 12-Phase design, which provides for some amazing overclocking results on the i7 5960X.

The capacitors on the evga boards have red accents on the tops, not pink, if that's what you thought of. Some small pictures are deceiving.

But they could stick out really bad in a monochrome design. But not in a red&black.

Good luck with whatever you buy though :)

I just wanted to let you know what's going on with the project, guys. I have gathered all parts and the computer is currently pending assebly, since I was told today by the shop where I ordered my X99m board that there will be a delay in the shipping. It was due today, but thay are not going to make it so I will probably have to wait till Monday or even possibly Tuesday, which is a bust. I guess that's what happens when you order parts during the holiday season.

Hopefully the next update will feature teh motherboard and possibly even the whole PC assembled and running.

The MARS GTX760x2 is more powerful than a single GTX 970, since it is on par or faster than the GTX 780TI in most benchmarks, especially after the more recent nVidia driver updates, which improve the SLI scaling by a lot. If I will be buying a new card, something that I don't really intend to right now, as I don't really need one, I would be going GTX 980 SLI.

@Analog What about 4-way SLI 760's

That's just straight out right ridiculous and insane. Yes, it will look damn sexy, but the performance gain will be completely unjustifiable, concidering the fact that one of these cards costs more than 500 euros. As I said, this card is plenty fast for now and I have no imediate plans to upgrade it. If I do decide, however, it will be probably with a pair of GTX 980s or an other flagship dual-GPU graphics card, like the GTX 990, which is expected in Q2 of this year. If Asus decide to make a MARS 970x2 that will be a nice option for me as well. I am also interested in what will be the next ARES card, hopefully AMD will bring something new to the table. I really do prefer having one card only in my rig, instead of two. :)

PS: I am still waiting for my motherboard. I talked with the store today and they assured me that I will finally have it my hands on Wednesday afternoon, 6 days after the initially promised date of delivery. Apparently those retards mixed up the addresses... I really don't know how that is remotely possible, but they did...

I have started cleaning up the 350D so if you guys want some sneak-peak into that I can share some photos with you. Basically my living room is entirely covered with computer parts.

760s only support 3-way.

Yes and no. Regular GTX 760 only have 3 way SLI support, yes, but I don't have one of those. I have a MARS card and those have support for quad-SLI, since on one PCB there are already two GPU cores.  ;)
