SLI 770's or Crossfire 7970 Ghz Edition cards

matas17

So im about to upgrade my rig, already got all the parts just left to decide on gpu's. I'm either gone buy two 770's or two 7970 Ghz Edition cards. So im gone watercooling cpu and GPU's and i was wondering which gpu's to choose and would 760w psu be fine with this setup or am I pushing the limit?

My new Rig spec is:

Intel i7 3930k

Gigabyte Ga-x79-UP4

Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB 1866

Two 770's or two 7970's GHz Edition cards

Corsair Ax 760watt PSU

OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD

WD Green 2TB HDD

Fan Controller

Swiftech MCP655 pump

NZXT Switch 810 Case.

Two 770's, because of AMD's frame stuttering, Nvidia is a much better choice. If you can, go with 4GB cards because if you have that much graphics power you probably could use the extra frame buffer. A 760W PSU is probably enough, but I'd shoot for at least 800W.

I agree, 770's all the way. Also, I honestly wouldn't build a top line SLI system with less than a 900 watt PSU personally, and I believe that rig will come close to being at 700-750 mark if you are planning to overclock stuff.

A 760W PSU is more than enough. I'd probably go with the two 770 4GB cards too.

Your rig will probably peak at 400-500W tops, so don't worry about pushing its limits.

Really, you don't think it will peak over 400-500? I don't have a GTX 680 personally (pretty much a 770), but really, that little power? My GTX 470 + i7 920 easily sucks 550 watts at load :/

470 Cards take up more juice, this gen cards like 660 and so on take less juice then 470

I realize they are much more efficient, but for an SLI solution and a X79 platform to use the exact same as my setup I guess is just surprising to me.

Someone said something about 4gb 770's having a crippled bus or something? Idk anything about that but yea, go with nvidia for sure, I hear tons of bad stuff about AMD Xfire having issues. (I'm not hating and yes people sometimes have no problems at all)

yea i know i bought my brother 7850 from xfx and it had some issues where it would crash because of the drivers but that got updated and now it runs perfectly for him.

I am a pretty big EVGA guy personally. I like their support and just their company in general. But Asus would be my second option for sure. But honestly any card is a good option, I am just long time supporter of EVGA and Asus :)

I have an EVGA acx 780, I wrote a review on it if you wanna watch, I hear they have amazing customer service+ VERY good RMA + warranty policies if you take the cooler off to watercool later on I hear they're "somewhat" ok with it.

I would say peak at 600-650. 400 for a 3930k and SLI 770's? That's more power than 400

Even if that were the case, A 750W PSU would still be more than you would need.

I say go with the two 7970's , overclocking a GPU is very easy and the 7970 at stock is on par with the GTX 770. You can easily push the core clock to 1100. As with the whole "frame studder" I really think people are blowing it out of proportion, I have a 7970 Tri-fire setup and barely see any sort of studder, that said any multi-gpu setup has some sort of studder and there is no way of avoiding it, I just think everyone has blown the crossfire issues out of proportion.

Instead of dual 770s or dual 7970s, you would be better off with one water cooled 780 performance wise but if you just want to say your rig has SLI or Crossfire then i would go with dual 770s.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

Sure. As long as there is no heavy overclocking and a lot of SSDs

I just wanna add that i went for xfire 7970s and ive had no problems with frame stuttering except in skyrim. I realise that the evidence states that it is present but its still true that a lot of people done notice it.

Going by UK pricing i would get the 7970s. They are cheaper than the 770s and have more vram. The only 4gb 770 i found was significantly more expensive and not worth the extra costs imo.

Which ever option you choose you will be more than happy tho :)
