yes. removed all AMD related programs before I swapped the cards...

No its the TDFD.. everything was stock

You say programs , did you use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller ) to get rid of any remaining gpu drivers ?

obiously you are doing something wrong a 970 is more powerful than a 290x it seems like a driver issue

You should be getting around 8800 score with FX 8320, or 11000 with an i5 or an i7.

Make sure the card is working at the highest clock speeds. But it's probably a driver issue.

ok here is your problem you ran the gtx 970 test on firestrike extreme and you ran the 280x on firestrike (non extreme)

as you can see when you ran the 280x on extreme you got a score of 3500 which makes the gtx 970 score 1500 higher

Okay i have just seen your problem :

Look again at this photo you uploaded , The Score you got with the 970 is on the Fire Strike EXTREME benchmark , the 280x benchmark you are looking at is the normal Firestrike benchmark

the 970 is actually working fine :)

Yes, you want to completely wipe your system of any AMD GPU drivers to make sure that you get the best performance possible.

Have you compared your ASUS GTX 970 score to similar GPUs?

EDIT: It appears the issue has been identified.
