Why the high pricing of the GTX 900 series?

The 900 series has pretty much completely replaced the 700 series at this point, but the price remains 50% higher than the 700 series was at its peak (980 is 6000kr vs the 780s 4000kr in Sweden). When are prices going to drop down to normal? Or is this the future? Is it just going to keep going up now with every new number?

 

It's been what? 2 - 3 months since release? Almost a whole quarter without price reduction?

 

Anyone have a clue? I probably won't get a new computer for at least another 6 months, but this is still relevant to me for some reason.

 

PS. I've been kind of out of the whole hardware, PC-enthusiast scene for a while, and I can't remember if the 900 series was the answer to the 200 series from AMD or to the earlier ones. So if someone could enlighten me on that as well, that'd be great.

980 is not 780 but 780 Ti which will probably be around the same price. Check again

On release the 780 was $550 same as the 980. Then the 780ti was released for $750

And the 770 was $350 the same as the 970.

 

If you seriously think $350 is high you need to get a job...

it is an improvment on the series the 780=970=290x and 780 ti<980

It was released on the nVidia event on September 18th. The real sales began about 1~2 weeks after that.

 

The prices are high because the demand is very high and the supply is... not enough (or companies don't want it to be) so, until the demand decreases a little bit, the prices will still be high (at least higher than what it was supposed to be).

 

"Why anything new is overpriced for a few months after it's launched" is self-explanatory.

Prices are lower than they were for the 700 series as the 970 is about equal to the 780, and the 980 is about equal to the 780ti (900 series cards being slightly more powerful and having some new features).

The 970 is priced at what the 770 was at launch, and the 980 at what the 780 was. (or even less than they were)

Well I dont know where youre buying it from, but $350 should be less than 250€.

And you should probably get a job if youre looking to buy high end graphics cards.

Oh, by the way, the Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 is really cheap right now for only $370. Then a lotta people will order it and the price will go to 400~430$ for a while, then go back down again, etc, repeat.

It's a bit confusing because large portions of both the AMD 200 series and the GTX 700 series are just rebrands of earlier cards. But the two can be considered to be in direct competition to one another. GK110 (GTX 780, GTX 780 Ti, and Titan) was a sort of "new" architecture, which AMD responded to with the Hawaii chip (R9 290/290X/295X2).

 

Nvidia's GTX 900's represent a new generation that AMD has not yet responded to, though the 300 series is rumored to be coming relatively soon.

The 780 was $650 on launch day.  Then when 780ti hit the price dropped to $500 and I was peeved.

Most people have a midrange (200) dollar gpu
