Nokia N1: 8-inch Android Lollipop Tablet with iPad-Like Design and 64-bit Intel Processor

JantsoP

That doesn't really make any sense. You can fit any aspect ratio into any aspect ratio if you add black bars.

I meant this

Sorry I made it in paint really quickly, but here you can see that with 4:3, fitting in 16:9 and 3:2 content, requires top and bottom bars, whcih when watching a 16:9 movie are quite natural

however if using a 16:9 screen, you have to use side bars to fit the content in, which I think is less optimal, although I am inclined to agree that 3:2 is the best of all worlds

Since it has a x86 processor, I wonder if you could install Windows on it...

Is x64

I'd consider it if it had 8.1 with Bing, which I'm assuming wouldn't cost them much if anything to do.

Really? Let me show you how viewing a web page is on a 16:9 screen, my Note 3 is 16:9 afterall. All I did between these 2 screenshots is I changed the orientation of the phone.

16:9 is not good for web pages. 4:3 is better.

When did I say 16:9? If you hadn't snipped my quote you would have seen I was comparing it to 3:2.

But what content these days is 4:3?

Webpages are narrow and tall, not 4:3.

Most apps can easily be adjusted by for example putting a side bar on the left and then have a full 4:3 (or wider) area for the content on the right. My Twitter app does this for example.

Videos are, as you probably know, a complete disaster to watch on 4:3 (unless it's older stuff).

Most games are made for wide aspect ratios because that's what TVs, phones and computers have.

You're right that top and bottom bars are less annoying than side bars, but the thing is that I have never seen side bars on my 16:10 tablet except when I have watched old movies from back when 16:9 (or wider) wasn't standard.

You didn't, I was not necessarily calling you out, I was just showing how the different ratios stacked and why 4:3 might be a good choice

I think Apple chose 4:3 because most cameras shoot in 4:3, (except for dslrs etc)

Its a little quirky but I really like it actually, cant explain why, it just feels nicer than 16:9 tablets from my own experiance

This is all completely my opinion :)

3:2 is not as prevalent as 4:3 in the industry. I don't know of any device with it besides Surface Pro 3. You want them to spearhead a new standard but I'm willing to give Nokia a break, they are recovering. I don't expect them to set the world on fire with their first attempt. You did say you would prefer 16:10 compared to 4:3. 16:10 isn't that different from 16:9.

Oh no, that part of the post was not directed at you. I can totally understand why some people might prefer 4:3 vs 16:9 (actually, most Android tablets are 16:10).

I just don't see how anyone can argue that 4:3 is better than 3:2 for a tablet.

Well yeah there is only the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and the Surface 3 with that aspect ratio (that I am aware of). It doesn't matter that it's not as widely used though because things scales automatically on Android.

There isn't really any extra work making the screen 3:2 compared to 4:3, especially not since neither have been widely used in Android tablets (other than cheap Chinese ones we in the west are pretty oblivious to).

It just so frustrating to see companies making the same horrible mistake when there is a good solution out there. It's especially frustrating as someone who really like big tablets but there isn't a single good one on the market right now.

The tablet landscape looked very promising ~2 years ago but now it seems like companies are competing with each other on who can make the worst device.

How hard can it be to NOT make a stupid decision when designing your new product?

the 300$ part was directed at the shield tablet not N9 and it is 300$ http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LM6KF7O/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p147_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0DXEHT4A9D2DFCNDSNC2&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1688200382&pf_rd_i=507846 for 16gb with microsd slot something the N1 doesn't have, the 32gb shield tablet does cost 400$ but also has LTE

and yes i do consider copying a good design to be a bad design regardless of who designed it first, because its a effortless decision, like i said this thing on hardware is badass for the price, but i won't support someone that tries to be something else, even less when the company that its putting its name on this product is the same that 10 years ago destroyed everybody with innovative designs

Fair enough, but that's still a lot more money, for something that I personally would not benefit from.

The Nokia isn't an exact replica. It's thinner and lighter than the iPad, and has a laminated screen which the iPad does not.

The iPad has a 5mp camera, this has an 8mp.

The iPad has wireless N, this has up to AC. The Nokia has the headphone jack on the bottom, Apple's is on the top.

The iPad has a home button, the Nokia does not.

Small points, but points nontheless.

In all honesty it seems like they've improved upon Apple's design.

We can just agree to disagree.

Better than the iPad, actually.

Also, repost.

Also, they license their name now. So, it'll always be someone elses product that their name goes on.

Only time people won't complain about copying iphone is when companies start making trianglular "tablets."

So is this product actually designed and made by Nokia, or is this just the first product to have licensed the Nokia brand name?

This isn't coming to the U.S. mind you, mainly because there is a company here in the U.S. that would sue the pants off Nokia if they did.
