I have 1.2tb in my system, so I'm a pretty big badass myself..

This reminds me of a idea I had a while back about installing steam games on a NAS...

@LinusTech Maybe we could get a video about that in the future?

Yeah, I meant the bathtub server.

I highly doubt, that linustechtips.com would need anywhere near 48TB of storage

I doubt it is replacing the bathtub server. With all the new 4K footage the storage on both servers will probably be needed. Having the two servers also helps with the load on the network pipes.

Bandwidth&storage fairy told me raw 4K reaction images are going to be all the rage very soon.

48tb is crazy.
I'm in the middle of building a 2tb NAS / media PC, and I thought 2tb was a bit excessive. I guess 4k really does take up a lot of space.

Gaming PCs:
Intel i7 4790k, EVGA GTX 980ti, NZXT H440
Intel i5 7600k, Asus GTX 970 DC Mini, Silverstone SG13B
HTPC: AMD Phenom II X6 1045t, EVGA GTX 770 FTW, Fractal Node 604

Yeah.

I estimate that that 1 minute of 4K video is about 7 GB (7.2). So if they have a half hour of unedited footage (B-roll included) and the 10 minute final video the final size is about 288 GB for just a small video, A build guide could be upwards of 2-3 TB of unedited footage.

Hey BossMan, if you want to install Steam games to a NAS, set your NAS up so that it has a SAMBA-enabled shared folder (basically the system Windows uses to share folders), and then you can add that location as a networked drive under your "My Computer" or "This PC" window by right-clicking and selecting "Add a Network Location". Then, when it prompts you, you can either browse for the folder on the network, or type something like \\MyNAS\MySharedFolder\ and select a drive letter like Z:\ or W:\.

From there, go to your Steam settings, and add your new networked drive as a location you can install to (Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Steam Library Folders).

FreeNAS doesn't require much space, so since Linus asked what could be changed about this, I would say that the OS should be installed on a USB drive to free up one of the sata ports. And if you wanted a more reliable drive for the OS, which could have been the reason for the intel SSD, put it on an SLC compact flash card. Fitting that inside the case with a usb adapter may require some velcro.

One cool thing about freenas is that all the zfs and share configuration data is held in a single sqlite database. Back up the configuration database from the current setup's webui, flash the OS image to the CF card (no cd installation actually required), boot to that card, and restore that backup. after the system reboots everything should be up and running again, and you'll have another sata port to use for another drive.
