Should I upgrade to 1440p?

Hi all, so I recently upgraded my GPU to a 970, and so now im wondering if I should upgrade my monitor to a 1440p or keep my 1080p monitor and just keep playing at utlra with x16AA and stuff.

 

Like would 1440p at lower settings look better than 1080p with everything maxed?

Really depends, If you can wait a year or so, cheap 4K monitors should be out by then.

why not wait and save up and buy a 4k monitor as the difference between 1080 and 1440 is nothing compared to 1080 to 4k

If you wanted to play at 1440p, you should've gotten a 980.

If you have the money and cant wait for 4k then I guess get it as there is a slight difference but if you do decide on 4k then most games on ultra will be playing at 20-30 fps so if you don't mind turning the graphics down to medium you should be fine on 4k

If you feel like you need an upgrade, I suggest ultra wide 21:9. It may not be the graphical upgrade you are looking for but the immersion and field of view advantage you get from it is untouchable and I will never go back to 16:9. I will never have standard 4k

yes, but they are more expensive than 4k right now. Roughly around 1000 usd for a 3440x1440p 34" monitors. I don't think it's worth it right now. You can pay about 250 or under for a 25"  2560x1080p ips monitor with roughly the same pixel density. The  cheapest ones I have seen go for around 220. Best buy had one for 250 a week ago. I am waiting for a 3440x1440p 27" because that is the sweet spot for me.

The people telling you to get a 4k monitor don't realize it's not worth it if you only have one 970. If you're planning on going SLI then sure yea get a 4K monitor. Otherwise, get a 1440p monitor. a million pixel difference is a large difference and you can easily tell how much better it looks from 1080 to 1440

If you have a best buy you can also demo the ultra wide and see if you don't want to wait...I was worried about putting money into it until I did....then I couldn't bring myself to return it. The aspect ratio really does make a huge difference to me.

I think you'd need at least a 32"-42" monitor to be able to even see text and that easily at 4K. Otherwise it's just too small.

I can't go back to 1080p on my main monitor after using this 1440p one. Just seems so limiting, especially in vertical real estate. 

 

My monitor from 2006 had 1200 lines of vertical resolution. 1080 was always a step bakward for me.

If you feel like you want a bigger screen go for it. My buddy has a korean 1440p at 27" and I have an Acer 21.5" 1080p IPS display and I can't see the difference as far as image quality goes and games look the same but run so much better on mine. The pixel density is nearly the same and you usually get used to the size you play on. So if you want a bigger size, then 1440p might be worth it, if you want better image quality in games then you won't notice an improvement if your at 1080p currently.

Sure, the higher the resolution the better but you have to spend so much on your rig to be able to play at 4K with reasonable FPS and quality that it's definitely not worth it. Not for now, at least.

 

If you can, put a 1080p and a 1440p monitor side by side and you'll understand how much better 1440p is, and you don't need 980 SLI to play it at 60FPS.

 

All I'm saying is that it is worth upgrading to 1440p but I'd wait for 120/144Hz 1440p screens with lower prices next year.

you can run a single gtx 970 @ 60hz on 1440p, a 4k however you'd need to at least SLI the 970s to get same frame rate, with that said, there goes dual 4k monitor out the window.

 

i just bought 1440p. i will personally wait out many years so that 4k multi-monitor is available in 60-120 fps before i will consider upgrade.

1440p definitely, it's not going to sound as impressive as 4K, but if you want 4K you need the graphics horsepower to back it up, not to mention if you're running dual monitors and forced to use non-4K resolutions due to performance issues it will cause problems unless you want to play in windowed.

The problem is display size. A 27" 1440p monitor has nearly the same PPI as a 22" 1080p monitor. You won't notice any difference in pixel sharpness or image quality between these two. That's why a 1440p at 24" would be more attractive to me. The higher pixel density might actually be noticeable.

That's very accurate. The bigger the monitor, the higher the resolution must be. I don't like 24"+ monitors so I always tend to forget about them. 22~23" is the sweet spot for my taste.

I am one who needs wide screen monitors for workstation applications. It saves me a lot of time having two full size pages on one screen.
