Now we're just waiting for linus to go to a forge and attempt to custom make an entire cpu case from scratch.

i can't belive it... An aquarium PC! But the Graphics Card and CPU, how does it works on water?

It's mineral oil not water. It doesn't conduct electricity so it's safe for electronics.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It was pretty neat to see how much fun Linus and Luke were having while doing this. The best parts are when Linus inserts an innuendo and Luke somewhat tries not to acknowledge it, but it's there - IT HAPPENED, YOU CAN'T STOP IT!

 

Anyways, this was one of my favorite videos. Keep up the good work guys.

Why is this build guide in 4 parts? Although I can see with this complex build it may be suitable, I hope this isn't a trend in other build guides.

Loving the project, looking forward to the next part. I'd never dare to try that out though, I can already see myself making a very expensive aquarium with pretty parts instead of a PC.

Ha, in the vidio "Personal Project - Slick's Oil Cooled PC Computer Showcase Linus Tech Tips" at the end Linus said "Do an oil cooled machine build guide....(Linus replayed saying) NO!" Here we are 2 years and 6 months later with a Oil cooled machine build guide  :)

Awesome so far! That unsettling noise the acrylic was making however was more suspenseful than a Liam Neeson movie...

Hi guys,

 

I watched the oiled cooled build guide last week, such a cool project. 

For the cooling system it looks like you are just gonna be running a couple radiators, this is just air cooling of the oil. Once you have it all running is there any chance you will be able to see if you can get any improvements using dry ice to cool the oil.

Dry ice being only CO2 boils in the oil cooling it dramatically without introducing any contaminates to the oil. 

It could be done by chucking the ice in the main tank or by creating a separate reservoir in the cooling loop, pumping into the top of the reservoir then back into the main tank from the bottom (ie the coolest oil).

 

Just a though, with the whole system in oil it will be interesting too see how long it takes (i assume it would take a day or so) to get the oil to an equilibrium.

 

Cant wait to see the rest of the build guide.

Yah, it's basically a mineral oil pc submerged in a fish tank. Pretty cool, I though of this myself, but I don't wanna maintain a fish tank. Great to see someone did this, though I would have tried to make the mineral oil PC borders more stealth to make it look like 12 tank. 

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch
