The pentium G3258 is a great CPU for the price, and offers great single core performance, very important for gaming or a HTPC.

The gigabyte B81 motherboard will allow you to overclock it for extra performance, and the Hyper 212 Evo will keep the CPU cool while keeping the noise from your HTPC low.

A single 8GB RAM DIMM is enough for a HTPC, but if you use it for gaming you have the option of adding a second DIMM in the future for a total of 16GB.

The Hitachi 1TB hard drive will store all your movies and games, and more storage can be added as necessary.

A nice aftermarket 770 will make all your media playback seamless, and gaming will be great too. A 770 is a good choice because of its low operating temperatures, so you can have the GPU fans running pretty slow while watching movies or gaming. A quiet HTPC is always important! Nobody needs loud fans going while enjoying a game or movie.

And finally the small form factor case along with a high quality 80+ bronze certified power supply will make this system a great HTPC / couch gaming rig / steambox!

Designed mainly for gaming but as it is an micro atx build it wouldn't make a bad htpc either. A speedy 3.7 Ghz Intel i3 pairs nicely with the r9 285. :) good luck everyone

AMD Quad Core PC build based on the latest Athlon x4 860K CPU

the 860K will work with the R9 280 very nicely with no bottleneck when the CPU is pushed to 4.5GHz at 1.4V

comes with SSD for the OS and HDD for extra storage

includes a nice and powerful 650 Watt gold rated for future upgrades to the bigger GPU

I chose the Pentium for a low powered overclockable CPU with a H97 motherboard to partner it in a cheap, but potentially overclockable WiFi enabled base system. The motherboard was chosen largely because it had built in WiFi, so there would be less of a need for an ethernet connection if being used to stream netflix, or for casual gaming with a decent router in the house.

The RAM is just the cheapest decent 8gb cl9 1600Mhz kit I could find, and the storage is an SSD for silent fast loading times on the OS, with a 1tb drive for mass storage of games, films etc.

The GPU was the most powerful one I could get in the elite 110 and still afford the other parts, so it was a no brainer choice for me.

The PSU is also one of the cheapest I could get that still could power the system with 80+ bronze efficiency and be from a decently reliable source.

All in all, this system is for the sort of person who wants a powerful gaming system as well as a HTPC in their living room. a console replacement that can suit most needs and not have a case that stands out.

CPU: I want this build for both HTPC and Gaming. Between the Core i3 and the Pentium G3258, the choice was easy.  Core i3 over the Pentium G3258 becaue Core i3 has HT technology which is a feature that lets a CPU core make a virtual copy of itself. This makes the Core i3 a 2 cores / 4 threads CPU, the extra threads helps with programs and games that might need the extra processing power and because it's a 4 thread CPU, the Core i3 is also somewhat like a 'quad core'. Since I want this build to be a HTPC, then the Core i3 4130T fits that perfectly as it uses the least amout of power as possible. It has a TDP of just 35 watts, where the Pentium G3258 has a TDP of 53 watts.

Motherboard: The board selected for this build is a MSI and comes in a MicroATX form factor. It has 2x PCIe x16 and 2x PCIe x1 slots. This board provides a wide choice of upgrade options as the 2nd PCIe x16 slot can be used for another AMD video card to run in CrossFireX or other non PCIe x1 cards. There is also 4 ram slot with a maximum ram support of up to 32GB of DDR3 and SATA ports are right angled so they don't interfere with long length graphic cards.

The rest of the system we have a MSI R9-280 that is capable of handling games at 1080p and with its 3GB of vram, it's also capable of handling games that uses a lot of textures.

Storage comes in a 1TB Hybrid drive as it has the capacity of a HDD to store a lot of movies and games, but also with the speed of a SSD to speed up the loading process.

RAM is 8GB of Mushkin, it's a brand I've personally used on builds before. It's not the cheapest ram, that belong to some unknown brand I have never heard of. The case I picked is the BitFenix Phenom Nvidia Edition. Now some might find this odd, as the video card I used isn't even Nvidia, but this case has a much lower price than the non Nvidia edition, so I don't see why I can't use it for a non Nvidia build. The Nvidia edition cost just $50 vs the non Nvidia edition that cost almost $100. PSU is a Antec 620w which is just a few bucks more than the cheaper PSU, a EVGA which runs at 500w.

I have no idea if people ever flip to the second page when voting, but here's my configuration for a $600 gaming PC (it'll double as a HTPC if you're willing to use a NAS).

It's a mini-ITX build with on-board WiFi and an R9 290.  As clearance and budget are limited, the stock cooler is used for this multiplier locked processor.

CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($99.99 @ Micro Center)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M-ITX/AC Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($82.98 @ Newegg)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon R9 290 4GB TurboDuo Video Card  ($233.00 @ Newegg)
Total: $591.45

PCPartpicker will be added once I have access to copy-paste (no idea why this computer can't copy-paste into LTT).

use the keyboard shortcuts

it will work as normal

If you're happening to be using IE, then somehow copy and paste won't work. If it's not ie then try pasting with the keyboard.
