There's a possibility of my getting a HD800, reason being it's priced at 800USD which is within my budget....barely though. Minor cosmetic defect were pointed out by seller, but overall, the unit looks good and is in full working order. Should I go for it? :unsure:  I mean....800USD for a HD800 is......well, a steal.

That's the thing, it's priced so well, I felt that it'd be a shame to pass it up. I'd checked....I'd checked with Amazon, even used ones are going for about 1300USD! Hell, eBay has some, but lowest I've seen is at 910USD.

For that price I'd say go for it. Even if you end up not liking them, you can always resell them for atleast as much as you paid for them. I paid 980€ for mine (about $1250) but they were brand new. I could have gotten a store demo pair for 950€ but the price difference was so small I opted to get the new ones.

Buy them and if you don't like them, resell for $1000, wait a month or two somebody will bite (don't let them lowball you with their bullshit), and profitz. I'm almost tempted to do this myself.

He also has a HD650 for 280USD as well as the HD800, I have till tonight to make up my mind as to which to go for....800USD vs 280USD, though I read that the HD800 sounds more analytical while the HD650 is more of an all rounder.

If you got the cash, I'd say get both 600 and 650, keep the one you like most, resell the other. I'll never recommend the HD800 without extensive listening or a fat wallet.

Under normal circumstances, I'd agree......but the price! Lordy, the price!  800USD is the lowest I've seen.....ugh, gonna have to decide between this and the HD650 soon, real soon as I've got a dateline.

I guess cooler heads have prevailed, at least, that applies to me. After thinking things overs, I've come to the conclusion that my money would be better spent on the HD650 rather than the HD800. Firstly, after thinking things thru, I've concluded that it's rather foolish to always buy the most expensive, rather, I should focus on the sound I'd like. The HD650 has a bass tilt that I think I'd enjoy vis-a-vis the HD800 which can be described as being neutral. Besides, IF I were to get the HD800, I know I'd go overboard with headphone amp and DAC's which would further add to expenditure. When I get the HD650, I'd prolly look for a reasonably priced headphone amp/DAC.....NOT like the Woo Audio AMP/DAC that I was looking at. NOT getting the HD800 would save me a truckload of cash actually, guess it's good to mull things over after the initial frenzy at the thought of such a purchase.

 

And I'm ain't gonna kid myself, I ain't no audiophile, besides, being >50, my hearing ain't as good as it used to be.....NOT that it was ever 'good' in the first place.

Good job on that train of thought, though I personally would've bought the HD800 for $800, tried it out, sold it if I didn't like it for small profit.

Trying not to offend here - Those HD800's might actually be good for you then. I'm sure as you know as you get older you start losing hearing in the upper frequency range, it's natural.

 

Since the HD800's have a really boosted treble range, they might actually sound better to you then would somebody say in their 20's.

A few anti-HD800 people argued the exact opposite: Because the treble is boosted, older people would like it more due to the treble not bothering them as much. Although how valid is that I'm not 100% sure.

 

FR is the #1 factor in a headphone's perceived sound quality (except stuff like price and other lols), so nailing that ideal FR is important and EQ the rest of the way.
