Higher end audio....starting with cans

GamerDude

No, it's not...2500$ headphones are ridiculous! I shoulda tagged a /sarc. After re-reading it, I realize the sarcasm didn't translate at all.

I do however, think the OP, if possible should consider the HD700s- they're in the ops $ range+do a better job with a wider variety of genres; hence the babbling on about subjectivity with audio & the importance of listening to the phones IRL. At the end of the day $500+ is a lot of work->time->money and unlike a GPU which can be measured quantitatively, speakers/phones can't. How much better do $1500 cans sound than 10k or $600 ones? Only the op can(s) answer that question ;-)

I do. Ask me anything.  Tesla T1 and LCD-2 here.  Long story short, headphones that expensive are only worth it to reply to silly posts like this.

Why is my post silly (or were you referring to the entire thread)? All I said was that I don't think people who have no experience with this range of headphones are particularly qualified to give advice on them. Like myself; I haven't listened to any of these super high end cans so the best I can do it repeat second hand information. I guessed, not stated that there would be very few people who do actually have first hand experience with this range of equipment and so far, not that many people have. I said nothing about the quality or whether you should buy them.

Your post is silly because it was completely wrong and not helpful. I have Fostex TH600 which were $1000 at MSRP when they launched but have dropped a bit in price by now. You just assume because this isn't a forum specifically dedicated to audio that the people here aren't as knowledgeable but it's actually one of the most knowledgeable audio forums that tries to save other people money. Head-fi just buys into anything expensive.

Edit: Correction, the TH600 were actually $1299 MSRP at release. They're $700 right now from a 3rd party Amazon seller but $800 everywhere else.

If you had just said that it wouldn't be silly and incorrect.

"Pardon my French but this is just about the most ignorant blanket statement I've ever read. And though this is the internet, I'm not even exaggerating."

This comment, that people who have no experience of said headphones shouldn't give advice about those, is logic and sound. However....

@GamerDude

I am going to guess that there aren't enough people here on LTT who really know their stuff about that sort of high end. Me personally, I have a bit of knowledge on the $300 high end range (which IMO is the best $/performance range). Maybe go ask some of the people on http://www.head-fi.org/ if you are really set on spending that sort of money on super high end.

What are the best headphones you have bought/listened to date?

This comment, is just a wild and baseless assumption. What do you base your words, that there aren't enough people on LTT that really know their stuff about high-ends, on? Have you conducted a survey to all the people posting here in LTT? Have you interviewed them to find out whether or not they have had any experiences with high-ends stuffs? Or you just pulled it out of your toilet just like that?

Speaking strictly in ownership context, there are a few posters in this thread alone that own 1 or more of the high-ends. In your words, you said 'experience', which is broader than just the ownership context. People trying high-ends in stores, headphone meets, friends' possessions, expos (like the USF in my signature) can be considered as having some experiences. So I'd very much like to ask again, what's the base of your assumption there, if any?

This is the post I was referring to when I said "why is this post silly". I just want to point out I already said that I shouldn't have said "go to head fi". My whole reasoning for my original post was based upon the above point and the fact that this audio forum is relatively small and so the odds of having high numbers of people who have first hand experience with $1000+ is lower than on a forum dedicated to audio.

What do you base your words, that there aren't enough people on LTT that really know their stuff about high-ends, on?

I think I phrased that badly and you may have misinterpreted. What I said was "there aren't enough people" and "who really know their stuff about that sort of high end", again referring to first hand experience with $1000+ headphones. I didn't mean people don't know high end. I just meant there wasn't loads of people on here who actually buy super expensive headphones. I also did say "I am going to guess" as in, I could be completely wrong.

I never said that none of you don't know your stuff, I never intended to insult any of you and for doing that, I am sorry.

@GamerDude Sorry for wrecking your thread dude.

Ain't a problem, the disagreement among you guys have been rather civil, so it's fine by me. I have it narrowed down to two (the HD650 seller was a no show), I have the Alpha Dog at ~480USD and the Beyerdynamic at ~400USD. Let me say I'm quite flexible when it comes to sound, I like bass but if it's tight but has presence, I'm fine with that as well. Must have good mids and highs that aren't too bright or harsh. I've eliminated the HD800 as I think at ~840USD, it presents too much of an extravagance.

DT's have good bass. 880's if you don't like that much treble, 990 if you do. Any higher models than that don't really have any audible upgrade.

The HD650 seller just got in touch with me and I've struck a deal with him for the cans at 320USD....yes, it's used and off warranty, but he's giving me 7 days personal guarantee to assuage whatever reservation I have about it. I will meet up with him on Sat and finally own a 'high end' cans. ;) Damn, someone just put up a HD600 at almost half the price of the HD650.....should I go for that instead? Which has better bass? Or, should I get both since I have the budget? Heard the HD600 is more neutral with the HD650 having more bass, but HD600 would be better for jazz, classical types of music, the HD650 is a bit better all rounder.

Congrats! I hope you like them! Imo, the 650 sound better and more refined than the 600 but they are more similar than they are different. The 650 for sure has better (more emphasized) bass in comparison.

Damn, so damn tempted to take the HD600 as well since seller is offering it at a heart grabbing 184USD....and it's still under international warranty! Been reading up, seems the HD600 lacks the bass of the HD650, but is more neutral sounding, and according to some, more transparent than the HD650 which is a tad colored. I'm torn right now, I dunno if it'd be proper for me to simply withdraw the HD650 purchase (old skool guy, my word is my bond), so I guess what I'm asking here is......is the HD600 at 184USD cheap enough to buy as a 2nd 'high end' cans? Is there sufficient difference between them to justify its purchase?

Personal choice. If you can find an audio store near you that sells sennheisers that also has a listening booth, I would really recommend trying both before buying because audio is very subjective.

Another personal choice, but for $60 more dollars you can get a pair of Hd650 brand new off ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sennheiser-HD650-Reference-Class-Stereo-Headphones-/181543997343?pt=US_Headphones&hash=item2a44dd8f9f

Both are very nice sounding, high quality headphones. It kind of comes down to do you want, either a flater neutral sound or a neutral sound with a slight increase in bass and mid bass.

Not exactly 60USD more, I'd be hit with another 55USD charges for international shipping and customs charges......I'm in Asia. In my neck of the woods, a brand new HD650 is priced at 480USD to 560USD.

Edit - NVM, someone grabbed the HD600 within minutes of it being put up for sale....

HD650 is good, tilted to the warm side. Compared to the HE400, it's a bit lacking of the highs. HE400 got more distinct highs, while keeping warm.

"Better"
In other words, a headphone with a sound signature the OP likes, basically. Although I understand if somebody doesn't dig either hd600 or hd650s.

Please tell me you know that's not going to make your sound quality better. People have bid on antique firetruck toys too, but they don't think it makes their music sound better either.

You're telling me HD800 is too much of an extravagance for an audible difference, yet a $100 cable that does nothing to sound is NOT an extravagance?

I'm still not sure which cable I personally find to be the best looking. Although functionally I love my HD800 cable - except that it's too long.

well, the custom cable (about 90USD) + HD650 = 410USD is still a smidgen less than half the price of the HD800 I was looking at. The custom cable is about 1.6m long (perfect for when I'm at my desk) whereas the stock one is 3m long, a tad long for my liking.
