Best GPU for 1440p Ultrawide

Recommended Posts

I think I might upgrade my system to 1440p ultrawide once a better priced monitor comes out to the US (AOC or possibly a Korean monitor) Would it be best for me to see what AMD comes out with? Would a 970 run that resolution well enough for maxing out games?

Depends on the game honestly, with such a high resolution I wouldn't go above 4x AA. I'd even suggest you SLI two cards, 970 or 980.

Main: i7 2600 | ASUS P8Z68-V | 2x4GB Vengeance 1600 | GTX 580 | WD Blue 1TB | Antec TP-650C | NH U12S | W7 x64

Backup: X6 1090T | MSI K9A2 Platinum | 4x2GB XMS2 800 | GTX 550Ti | WD Blue 1TB |  Antec VP-450 | CM TX3 | W7 x64

A 970 wouldn't max out games but it would do decent. I would say at least 290x/980

So a 290x would still be a better card for higher than 1080p gaming than a 970?

You won't be able to max out crysis 3 with a 970, but it'll be perfectly fine.

Do you actually know this or are you guessing?

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

Accordingly to benchmarks (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1056?vs=1355) the R9 290X and GTX 970 are pretty much equal. ;)

A 970 would be fine card. But obviously a 980 would be a better card. A 970 should run every current game at ultra maybe 2xmsaa at 50fps or above @1440p, 980 should be able to push past 60fps and thats in the most stressing games.

Spoiler

Corsair 400C- Intel i7 6700- Gigabyte Gaming 6- GTX 1080 Founders Ed. - Intel 530 120GB + 2xWD 1TB + Adata 610 256GB- 16GB 2400MHz G.Skill- Evga G2 650 PSU- Corsair H110- ASUS PB278Q- Dell u2412m- Logitech G710+ - Logitech g700 - Sennheiser PC350 SE/598se

Is it just me or is Grammar slowly becoming extinct on LTT?

I have a 34UM95

Looking at your PC specs it seems like you would have no problem running that resolution, but I am thinking of waiting until it will be less than 1k USD to be able to get both the monitor and the GPU horsepower to run it.

I had a 760 before I had SLI 980s, and while it wasn't a enjoyable gaming experience, it was "playable" so a 970 would probably be fine

How rich is this guy? That's some expensive stuff.

He's probably just faking it. He probably just has a crappy pre-built rig. :P

No picture, no proof! :D

I'd wait for AMD's next gen gpus and buy the monitor in the meantime cause you can always set it to normal 16:9 2560x1440 or even 1080p if you wanna crank settings...

I still have to wait for the 1440p ultrawide AOC monitor to come to the US :P I will stick with my 1080p ultrawide until one comes available for less than what a 1440p and a ultrawide 1080p would be together.

That's a smart choice, sadly it may be a few months until aoc release their challenger to the 34 inch 21:9 monitor.
