Samsung 840/840 EVO Firmware Upgrade - Release

GoodBytes

As promissed, Samsung today has released a firmware upgrade for it's TLC based SSD's, the Samsung 840 and 840 EVO series, which fixes a critical issue, where data stored on the drive slows down in read speed considerably, reaching within months floppy drive speeds, even if the SSD is not plugged in.

What is unclear, is that we dont' know if the SSD simply moves old data arround, meaning it still is affetced with the issue of slowing down when the system is off for weeks or out of the system for a weeks, or genuinly fixes the problem. I guess tests needs to be done on that reguard.

Samsung released a firmware update for its 840 EVO series SSDs, which addresses the issue of lower read-speeds with 'older' data on the drive. Version EXT0CB6Q can be downloaded and applied using Samsung SSD Magician software for Windows, on systems with drives running on SATA AHCI host interfaces. The company also published bootable disc images, which lets you patch the drive without an operating system.

Says TechPowerUp

From TechReport, Samsung describe the issue:

SSDs usually calibrate changes in the statuses of cells over time via the flash management software algorithm. Due to the error in the software algorithm, the 840 EVO performed read-retry processes aggressively, resulting in a drop in overall read performance. This only occurs if the data was kept in its initial cell without changing, and there are no symptoms of reduced read performance if the data was subsequently migrated from those cells or overwritten.

Buy MX100, it's cheaper and has better flash without this problem.

The only people who stil buy 840 EVO are word of mouth sheep.

And yet some of us have had one for nine months or a year now.

Don't be a condescending ass.

Ditto, I got mine on sale also and Samsung magician software with rapid mode is what swayed me to get one.

yesterday's weirdness is tomorrow's reason why

I just bought another 840 EVO 250 GB, as I have only good experience with it. I have been using 500gb version for about half year without any problems.
Anyway, I am happy to see this, that this drive is not 'deprecated' and Samsung stil does care about it ;)

It first updates the firmware then do a full refresh (read and write all sectors again). This is why it is taking a while :)

Update takes a while, so don't cancel it.

it says there might be a chance of data loss. So I cant do it....

That's what they always say with a SSD FW update.

its marginaly cheaper and the evo out performs in nearly every way but yeah.......baaaa

yeah monumental....catastrophic.....so big that it took 1 FW update to fix....oh the pain

Then you're letting your ssd run at hdd speeds. Back up anything important and suck it up.

Do you have a link to the non EVO version?

Pro version doesn't have this bug so no FW available because it's not needed.

@GoodBytes only the Evo is affected. 840 Basic/Pro aren't affected.
