Gachr

New build for RedStone 4. If you are on Skip Ahead, meaning you are on RedStone 5, no builds.

Build is 17107 - This build has mostly bug fixes.

New Feature

  • When Windows Update starts, it will prevent the system from going to sleep, only when the system is idle up to 2h. If you close the lid of your laptop, or hit the sleep button or the power button, the system will go to sleep as expected. So basically, and in other words, when Windows Update kicks in, "going to sleep when system is idle" time is set to 2h until Windows Update is done.

Bug fixes:

Quote
  • We fixed an issue where Settings would crash when you tried to open Themes.
  • We fixed an issue where the Settings tile didn’t have a name if you pinned it to Start.
  • We’ve updated About Settings to include at a glance entries for the two new Windows Defender pillars (Account Protection and Device Security).
  • We fixed a typo in Storage Sense Settings.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in all dropdowns in Settings appearing blank until clicked.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in Settings crashing after having navigated to and left Sound Settings.
  • We fixed an issue where closing certain apps after using in-app search could result in them hanging on the splash screen the next time they were launched.
  • We fixed an issue where plugging in an external optical drive (DVD) will cause an Explorer.exe crash.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the hamburger button in Windows Defender overlapping the home button.
  • We fixed an issue where certain games using Easy Anti Cheat could result in the system experiencing a bugcheck (KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED).
  • We fixed an issue where we had observed seeing longer-than-normal delays during install at the 88% mark. Some delays were as long as 90 minutes before moving forward.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the Windows Defender offline scan not working in recent builds.
  • Some Insiders may have noticed a new message when holding down the power button which says “Please release the power button. We just need a few more seconds to shut down”. This is an Insider-only feature that gathers additional diagnostic data for situations where holding down the power button was used to recover an unresponsive or nonfunctional system.  It is important to note that holding down the power button is not the appropriate way to shutdown/reboot a system that is functioning properly. See this support page for additional information on how to properly shutdown your PC.

Known issues:

Quote
  • Buttons on Game bar are not centered correctly.
  • Selecting a notification after taking a screenshot or game clip opens the Xbox app’s home screen instead of opening the screenshot or game clip.
  • Post-install at the first user-prompted reboot or shutdown, a small number of devices have experienced a scenario wherein the OS fails to load properly and may enter a reboot loop state. For affected PCs, turning off fast boot may bypass the issue. If not, it is necessary to create a bootable ISO on a USB drive, boot into recovery mode, and this this will allow bypass.
  • Tearing a PDF tab in Microsoft Edge will result in a bugcheck (GSOD).

New Build for Fast Ring - Build: 17112

Just bug fixes:

Quote

We fixed an issue where selecting a notification after taking a screenshot or game clip opened the Xbox app’s home screen instead of opening the screenshot or game clip.

We fixed an issue where EFI and Recovery partitions were unexpectedly listed in Defragment and Optimize Drives.

We fixed an issue optimizing drives in Defragment and Optimize Drives didn’t work in the last few flights.

We fixed an issue resulting in a permanently black window if you dragged a tab out of a Microsoft Edge window, pulled it up to the top edge of the screen, and moved it back down and released it.

We fixed an issue where the warning on Windows 10 S when trying to run non-Microsoft Store apps from File Explorer might end up stuck behind the File Explorer window.

We fixed an issue where there was some unexpected extra space in the File Explorer navigation pane before the chevron icons to expand/collapse folders.

We fixed an issue where if focus was set inside Action Center pressing Esc wouldn’t close the Action Center window.

We fixed an issue that could result in ShellExperienceHost periodically waking the device from hibernate if active live tiles were pinned to Start.

We fixed an issue where navigating to Settings > System > Focus Assist > “Customize your priority list” could crash Settings.

Known issues:

Quote

IMPORTANT: The Microsoft Store may be completely broken or disappeared altogether after upgrading to this build. Please see this forum post for details including a workaround on how to get the Microsoft Store back.

If you try to open a file that is available online-only from OneDrive that hasn’t been previously downloaded to your PC (marked with a green checkmark in File Explorer), your PC could bugcheck (GSOD). You can work around this problem by right-clicking on these files and selecting “Always keep on this device.” Any file-on-demand from OneDrive that is already downloaded to the PC should open fine.

Post-install at the first user-prompted reboot or shutdown, a small number of devices have experienced a scenario wherein the OS fails to load properly and may enter a reboot loop state. For affected PCs, turning off fast boot may bypass the issue. If not, it is necessary to create a bootable ISO on a USB drive, boot into recovery mode, and this this will allow bypass.

When Movies & TV user denies access to its videos library (through the “Let Movies & TV access your videos library?” popup window or through Windows privacy settings), Movies & TV crashes when the user navigates to the “Personal” tab.

  • 3 weeks later...

As you may have noticed, they have been a number of updates on the Fast Ring. I was very busy to post anything, and didn't really bother as it was just bug fixes as it arrives to the official build.

Today, a new build is released, and this one looks like it is a Release Candidate of the official build, possibly being the official build, as the Insider watermark at the bottom of teh screen has been removed. (This also mean I should type up my usual "What is new?" thread for the Tech News section).

On Skip Ahead, also there was a new build, but just bug fixes. however, as my cat walked on my keyboard, I noticed that it somehow hit a keyboard combination that showed a Cortana voice box at the top center of the screen. It didn't work.. I think the text in the search box said "Initializing..." and stuck there. I didn't have a chance to try and figure it out what was the magic key comb. Definitely a Win+(something) key.

New Build for Redstone 5 - Build 17634

What's new?

Nothing. Calendar app has a search box, and that is it, and more commands on something I doubt anyone will use, and I think it is a complete waste of resources, and they should instead focus on more language support and more command and integration with devices else they'll be too late to the party once again: "Cortana Show Me". A new feature added in RS4 (Spring Creators Update that is coming), to have Cortana show you around to do something.

What's fixed:

Quote
  • We fixed an issue where typing in the Microsoft Edge URL bar immediately after opening a new tab might result in the letters appearing in an unexpected order.
  • We fixed an issue when opening .html or .pdf files from the local system (double-click, right-click > open), Microsoft Edge will not render the loaded content if Microsoft Edge wasn’t already running before opening the file.
  • We fixed an issue where PDFs displayed using Microsoft Edge would shrink after refreshing the page when using a DPI scaling > 100%.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in Microsoft Edge crashing when turning off certain extensions.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in Task Manager not showing the application title in the process name for open Visual Studio projects.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the UAC dialog potentially not rendering correctly in the last few flights.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in certain devices with BitLocker enabled unexpectedly booting into BitLocker recovery in recent flights.
  • We fixed an issue where the Emoji Panel would close after typing an accent in certain languages.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in focus being lost after using WIN+A to close the Action Center.

New build released!

Microsoft only says:

Quote

As Build 17133 progressed through the rings, we discovered some reliability issues we wanted to fix. In certain cases, these reliability issues could have led to a higher percentage of (BSOD) on PCs for example

I guess the BSOD issue is with the upgrade phase.

Windows 10 Redstone 5 (Fast Ring Skip Ahead)

New build 17650

This is again a very small update

What's New:

  • Windows Defender has been updated to get the Fluent Design treatment. It looks more like the Settings panels, if you wonder. With the side column being with the same glass effect (or whatever you want to call it).
  • Windows Defender Firewall, now support Windows Subsystem Linux (WSL)

What's Fixed:

Quote
  • We fixed an issue where File Explorer would always open with the ribbon minimized, rather than remembering how you’d left it.
  • We fixed an issue where elements on the main page of the Windows Defender Security Center app would slightly change size on mouse hover.
  • We fixed an issue where non-default languages might unexpectedly have the option to remove in Settings greyed out.
  • We fixed an issue where the Color Filters and High Contrast icons were switched in Settings.
  • We fixed an issue where clicking links in Settings that launched other apps would result in Settings crashing and nothing else happening.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in some people experiencing a Settings crash when navigating to Apps > Default Apps > Set defaults by App.

Known issues:

Quote
  • On resuming from sleep, the desktop may be momentarily visible before the Lock screen displays as expected.
  • When Movies & TV user denies access to its videos library (through the “Let Movies & TV access your videos library?” popup window or through Windows privacy settings), Movies & TV crashes when the user navigates to the “Personal” tab.
  • Tiling and cascading windows, including features like “View Side by Side” in Word, will not work for inactive tabs.
  • The Office Visual Basic Editor window will currently be tabbed but is not intended to be in the future.
  • Opening an Office document while the same app has an existing document open may cause an unintended switch to the last active document. This will also happen when closing a sheet in Excel while other sheets remain open.
  • Local files or non-Microsoft cloud files will not be automatically restored and no error message will be provided to alert the user to that fact.
  • Sets UX for Office Win32 desktop apps is not final.  The experience will be refined over time based on feedback.
  • The top of some Win32 desktop app windows may appear slightly underneath the tab bar when created maximized. To work around the issue, restore and re-maximize the window.
  • Closing one tab may sometimes minimize the entire set.
  • We’re aware of an issue that causes Narrator to read extra text when invoking Alt + Tab, and we’re working on a fix.
  • Using arrow and Page Up / Page Down keys doesn’t work to scroll webpages in Microsoft Edge. You’ll need to use another input method (mouse, touch, or touchpad).
  • If you complete the setup for a Windows Mixed Reality headset on this build, the headset will remain black until it is unplugged and reconnected to the PC.

That's it. So those who are not on Redstone 5, still aren't missing much as of yet.

I don't know if this should go here or in Tech News, so please let me know:

Lucas on Twitter (no info on him), has discovered something pretty interesting on the installation of Redstone 5.

windows-10-lean.jpg

Windows 10 Lean, or as it is called once you install it: Windows CloudE (I guess they tried to avoid "Windows CE"). Whatever the official name of the OS edition will be (prob engineers picked the name, or having fun), this install of Windows 10 is 2GB less than Windows 10 Pro.

It includes Windows 10 + desktop shell experience, Edge, Store app, File Explorer, and maybe a few other things, but that is it. Not even the registry editor (Regedit.exe) is there, and there is no background (no idea if there is no wallpaper included, or that you cannot set one...), But Lucas says that the OS is NOT locked. He was able to copy regedit.exe from another Windows 10 machine, paste it in this Windows 10 Lean edition, and it runs perfectly fine, like if it was included with the OS.

windows-10-cloudE.jpg

This could be 2 things:

  1. Windows 10 Lean, and that is it. No Windows Defender, no nothing, targeted for low powered devices (who knows, maybe Windows 10 for ARM to try and get every last drop of performance with 'S mode' acting as a level of security of sorts, enabled by default), or try and fit in system with low storage options like 16GB for allowing the OS to be installed on ultra low end system (probably OEMs will put a 1 wallpaper instead of black).

  2. Windows Andromeda project, which one commenters in the news article suggested. As we know, Microsoft is hard at works at making Windows 10 into components, and this is a "in-the works" build getting there, where behind things, they are components, which we can't customize as of yet, and they included Shell32 as CShell (what it will be replaced with eventually) is not ready, just to give something for internal testing.

Tomato Sauce: https://mspoweruser.com/windows-10-lean-microsoft-working-on-a-cut-down-version-of-windows-10-for-redstone-5/

What do you think? And should I bring this post in the Tech News section?

Everyone (Insiders) gets Redstone 5!

Build 17661

  • Windows Defender is now called Windows Security. I think they should have called it that since Windows 8, as Windows Defender confused everyone with the Vista/7 crappy malware scanner
  • Timeline has now more Fluent Design and animation. Looks very nice
  • If you were not on Redstone 5 before, you have Sets! Sets can be disabled in the Settings panel (Settings > System > Multitasking)
  • New App: Screen Sketch. The eventual Snipping Tool replacement:
    8a6dafce2c43d574ff6e7ea9caa8a980-1024x68

It replaces the old basic screen shot maker took under Ink Workspace if you had a pen (or enabled it), and now is its own app.
In addition, you can open it by:
    • Win + Shift + S
    • Can set a pen button to open it
    • You can set Print Screen button (Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard. And look under: Print Screen Key)
  • Windows will now disable notifications automatically for ANY full screen games.
  • HEIC image format can now be rotated, and image metadata can be modified.

As for the rest:

Quote

General changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

  • We’ve made a number of improvements to how Narrator communicates the use of Sets – for example, Narrator will now inform you of the tabs by reading information such as Tab # N of M as you open and move between tabs. If you’re a Narrator user, please take a moment to try out Sets with today’s build and share feedback about the experience.
  • When you clean install or do a PC refresh, you’ll find that the Out of Box Experience for setting up your PC now includes a page for enabling activity history sync, which will help you continue what you were doing, even when you switch devices.
  • We’ve adjusted how you access skin tones in the Emoji Panel – you’ll now see a row of skin tone colors to select from when people emoji are in view.
  • We fixed an issue where using arrow and Page Up / Page Down keys didn’t work to scroll webpages in Microsoft Edge.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the mouse cursor becoming invisible when hovering over certain UI elements and text fields in the last two flights.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the mouse cursor not animating correctly in the last two flights.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in the Game Bar not appearing for some Insiders after pressing WIN+G.
  • When you hover over the Windows icon in the taskbar, a tooltip will now appear for Start.
  • We’ve updated the design of the handwriting panel so that the delete button is now a top level button. The button to switch languages is now under the “…” menu.
  • If you go to Pen & Windows Ink Settings, you’ll find a new option that allows your pen to behave like a mouse instead of scrolling or panning the screen.

 Known issues

  • Certain notifications from Action Center may cause regular Explorer.exe crashes. We’re working to get this fixed in the next flight.
  • VPN may not be working after updating to this build. To get VPN working again, delete the %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Network\Connections\pbk* directories. Check if the VPN profile you need shows up already and if not, reinstall the appropriate VPN client app you need.
  • After updating to this build and installing the latest app updates from the Microsoft Store, when you log in to additional user accounts on the PC there may be missing apps. You can run the following PowerShell script when logged in to users with missing apps on your PC to fix the issue: Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}
  • We’re aware of an issue that causes Narrator to read extra text when invoking Alt + Tab, and we’re working on a fix.
  • If you complete the setup for a Windows Mixed Reality headset on this build, the headset will remain black until it is unplugged and reconnected to the PC.
  • [ADDED] If your PC appears stuck at “Preparing to install…” somewhere between the 80%-100% – please be patient and wait up to 30 minutes for this stage to complete.

Known issues for Sets & Office

  • Sets UX for Office Win32 desktop apps is not final.  The experience will be refined over time based on feedback.
  • The top of some Win32 desktop app windows may appear slightly underneath the tab bar when created maximized. To work around the issue, restore and re-maximize the window.
  • Closing one tab may sometimes minimize the entire set.
  • Right-clicking a tab in Sets will not bring up a context menu in this build.
  • Local files or non-Microsoft cloud files will not be automatically restored, and no error message will be provided to alert the user to that fact.

Oh and the massive indent on File Explorer drives and folders is now fixed.

Rejoice!

Oh and there is a new app called 'Your Phone'

Which doesn't do anything... You have a button which opens the Settings panels to add a phone.. that is all.

Yes. Had tons of BSODs. Nothing fixed it, then I jumped to RS5. Seems to be caused by bad drivers and kernel changes.

Also, I've noticed that on my Surface Pro 4, I'm having issues to render UWP apps with media content (e.g. Netflix or Spotify) correctly.

Do you think I should rollback to 16299 on my Surface?

This last/current build (17661) of Windows 10 is funny. Explorer contentiously crashes on my Surface Pro 3. If I remove the Intel drivers, the problem is solved. On my desktop I have an Nvidia GPU and have no problem. I don't have integrated Intel GPU on my desktop to test. Not sure if someone else has this problem also. But the feedback hub has this reported many times. I up voted.

I had this issue since day, trying to find a solution.

Do you guys have this problem?

HOLY PINEAPPLE OF THE GREAT GODS OF NEPTUNE

I am checking the new release of Windows 10, and wow there is a lot of features. I'll post when I get home, but very quickly!

  • Dark theme File Explorer: 3b996c4660e65aa63878506b6c547aa1.png

  • As announced at BUILD, Notepad supporting now supports Linux/Unix and MacOS next line charcaters. No more opening a test file that was done on another OS and have everything on 1 line.

  • Win+V, a new clipboard manager to pick several copied entries (from my understanding), and cross PC copy/paste

I'll go more in details later.

DOWNLOAD NOW!

What are you waiting for? Nintendo to make one?

New - Build 17666

As mentioned before, this one is a big one.

  • Sets now has the acrylic effect.
  • Cloud Clipping!
Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V works as ever before. But if you do Win+V, you'll get cloud clipping panel. The panel shows a history of items you copied that you can recall to, pick to sync to another system (or have it all sync between your system all the time), pin them to stay at the top to recall as needed, and remove a selected item.

Images also show on there as well. Not files though, at least from my testing.

You can find a variety of options  under Settings > System > Clipboard:
    Capture.PNG.7f5799cb64c72943ede3c530997838bd.PNG

Microsoft does note that the cloud feature only works for content that is bellow 100KB, and for the history to be kept, the content copied needs to be less than 1MB, else it will ignore it from the history list.

  • Dark Theme is here, but the picture I showed above from the article is not what we actually have yet, sadly. It is... incomplete:

  • As mentioned, Notepad now support Unix, Linux and Mac Carriage return, so now text will no longer display on 1 line, as it used to.
  • Notepad has a new right-click menu item. If you right-click on a text, you can now do "Search with Bing"
  • Cortana Web Preview panel gets improved giving out now file information if you search for it, same for apps.

  • Start Menu Tile Folder can now be named:
    a75b5c6bbabd5f8ab4bf8fbb07688845.gif

  • If you have an Android phone you can now link your phone with the new app "Your Phone", and get instant access to text messages, photos, and notifications. I cannot test this

What has been improved:

Quote
  • We fixed an issue with dll from the previous flight that could result in explorer.exe crashing every few minutes.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in VPN potentially not working after updating to the previous build.
  • We fixed an issue from the previous build where apps may appear to be missing in secondary accounts after receiving app updates from the PC’s primary account.
  • We fixed an issue from the previous flight resulting in a bugcheck with the error IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL in tcpip.sys.
  • We fixed an issue where a border would be visible when you maximized windows in the last few flights.
  • We’ve updated the design of This PC so that there’s no longer space displayed for the cloud files state icon (which isn’t relevant on this page).
  • The snipping toolbar (with WIN + Shift + S) will now follow your desired theme, light or dark.
  • We fixed an issue that could result in the Emoji Panel and the touch keyboard not displaying correctly if invoked immediately after restarting explorer.exe.

Known issues:

Quote
  • If your PC appears stuck at “Preparing to install…” somewhere between the 80%-100% in Windows Update – please be patient and wait up to 30 minutes (or in some cases – longer than 30 minutes) for this stage to complete.
  • After completing the Windows Mixed Reality First Run experience, OOBE is black. Motion Controllers are also not recognized in exclusive apps. For Insiders who want to keep Windows Mixed Reality working – you might want to consider hitting pause on taking new Insider Preview builds until these issues are fixed. You can pause Insider Preview builds by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program and pressing the “Stop Insider Preview builds” button and choosing “Pause updates for a bit”.
  • We’re aware of an issue that causes Narrator to read extra text when invoking Alt + Tab, and we’re working on a fix.
  • If you complete the setup for a Windows Mixed Reality headset on this build, the headset will remain black until it is unplugged and reconnected to the PC.

Specifics to Sets:

  • Sets UX for Office Win32 desktop apps is not final.  The experience will be refined over time based on feedback.
  • The top of some Win32 desktop app windows may appear slightly underneath the tab bar when created maximized. To work around the issue, restore and re-maximize the window.
  • Closing one tab may sometimes minimize the entire set.
  • Local files or non-Microsoft cloud files will not be automatically restored, and no error message will be provided to alert the user to that fact.

Some things I have noticed:

  1. Sets cannot be disabled anymore. You have to add, every, single, program, one, by, one, to the exclusion list. Very annoying. Personally, I want the reverse. Disable unless specified, and can have it enabled by default on select apps that makes sense, like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and so on, and not on Task Manager, Settings panel, Microsoft Store, Firefox/Chrome which already has tabs, etc.
  2. My task bar is now transparent... not sure if this is a A/B test, or a problem, or what... My Surface Pro 3 is updating as we speak, so we will see.

This is the only version of windows I'm having installation problems with, it keeps reverting to the previous version of windows..

Some of the redditers have said to uninstall your gfx drivers before applying the update, can't confirm it works but will edit this post if it does.

Anyone else have problems installing this build?

Edit: Unlike previous builds I had to remove my overclock otherwise would bsod on 75%, I would also use DDU to remove your gfx drivers.

Installed perfectly fine after that.

I had the same issue with a transparent task bar, but after a restart it went away.
