High end video cards for 3x1 display?

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Hey, I am currently running a 3x1 (three acer GD235Hz @ 120hz total screen res is 5760 x 1080) display with two hd 4870x2 cards ( not sli, since they are 10.1 and dont support eye-infinity), I was looking to upgrade my graphics and the card(s) I had in mind are the "7990", may go with a devil 13 debating if i should just get their stock 7990 anyways here is the link for the cards.

Also, my single card vs a 7970

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=572&card2=663

reason why i think i will only need 1 7990, but still not tooo sure

Questions:

Will 1 card be able to power all 3 monitors and game around 120 FPS ( I want to use v-sych with my monitors) ?( Crysis, League of Legends, BF3, Borderlands are the main games i am currently playing now.)

Reason for upgrade:

-Eyeinfinity support

-Current cards are starting to slow down and not even dx11

My Setup:

CPU: I7-3930k @ 4.5GHz | Cooling: Corsair H100 in PP /w NF-F12 | MOBO: Asus P9X79 WS LGA 2011 | RAM  32 GB Mushkin Redline @  2133  | GPU:  (2) Sapphire 7970 GHz 6G edition | Case:  NZXT Switch 810 | Storage: Raid 0: Mushkin ssd total 480 GB | PSU: XFX ProSeries 1250W

Displays: (3) Acer GD235HZbid (120 hz) with a Ergotech Triple Monitor ArmStand /w telescoping wings | Keyboard: Xarmor black backlight mechanical with cherry blues | Mouse: Roccat Kone XTD  | Sound: Logitech 5.1 Z-5500 and Astro A-40's

the 8000 series are coming very soon, maybe wait, or 7970 ghz in crossfire, a lot easier to sell a 7970 than a 7990 for upgrade money.

lol ive been waiting since the 6990, honestly if you just wait for the newest and the best then you will never upgrade. and the reason I dont like the 7970 is because of the 3GB ram compared to the 6, since i may upgrade my monitors and run a 3x2 setup in the near future

My Setup:

CPU: I7-3930k @ 4.5GHz | Cooling: Corsair H100 in PP /w NF-F12 | MOBO: Asus P9X79 WS LGA 2011 | RAM  32 GB Mushkin Redline @  2133  | GPU:  (2) Sapphire 7970 GHz 6G edition | Case:  NZXT Switch 810 | Storage: Raid 0: Mushkin ssd total 480 GB | PSU: XFX ProSeries 1250W

Displays: (3) Acer GD235HZbid (120 hz) with a Ergotech Triple Monitor ArmStand /w telescoping wings | Keyboard: Xarmor black backlight mechanical with cherry blues | Mouse: Roccat Kone XTD  | Sound: Logitech 5.1 Z-5500 and Astro A-40's

I'd go with two 7970 if you can't wait for HD 8000 or GTX 700.

the reason is that 2x 7970 are both cheaper and perform better than a single 7990.this is essentially due to the fact that dual gpu graphics cards have two of those gpu's but under-clocked versions with almost no overclocking headroom whatsoever.also since it has to cool 2x gpu's it'll run hotter and most likely louder.

the 7990 devil 13,$999.99 + $11.13 shipping, runs at

925MHz and can boost up to 1000mhz core clock.

and 1375mhz memory clock.

the average 7970,$389.99 + $20 rebate and free shipping, runs at

950mhz and boosts up to 1000mhz.

and 1425mhz memory clock.

so if you buy the two 7970's you could overclock and get even better performance, maybe squeeze an extra year out of them before needing to replace them.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814202008

total price $779.98.

the 7990 will most likely overclock terribly, have poor compatibility with a majority of games, and will do worse than a 7970 crossfire.

total price $1011.12

also since AMD does not actually support the 7990 you'd have to wait for powercolor or club 3D, whichever you buy the 7990 from,to make their own versions of new drivers in order to get sli profiles for new games, better performance and optimization, etc.

and as mentioned above it'll be easier to sell two 7970 later on for $200-300 on ebay or something than trying to sell a 7990 for $700-800 because if a person is spending that much on a graphics card, chances are they'll be willing to fork over some more cash and buy it new

and the reason I dont like the 7970 is because of the 3GB ram compared to the 6

If you are talking about the 7990 with 6GB of VRAM, I'd just like you to know that it's 6GB combined, but you can only use 3GB because each GPU on the card is 3GB each, so you will be limited to only 3GB.

So technically a 7990 is 2x7970s w/3GB of VRAM.

So the memory still mirrors even if it is on the same card? I thought that was only the case when sli-ing/crossfire two separate cards.

It's still limited, yes, sadly.

So in all, you're better off getting 2x7970s or waiting for the new gen. cards, unless you only have one PCI-E slot on your motherboard.

well that is some what disappointing, my main reasoning for the 7990 was the 6gb ram.

so is this card actually 6gb ram?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814202005, but the reviews seemed to be generally bad ( loud fans )

Yes, that is a true card with 6GB of VRAM. That is why it's almost twice as much as other 7970s.

nothing would use 6GB of vram,3GB is plenty.

and even assuming some huge resolution could use 6GB of vram,I'd assume at least 6x 2560x1440, the gpu itself would bottleneck before the memory ran out.

it's like if you bought a core 2 quad or athlon x4 back in the day to handle everything.by the time the quad core was able to be utilized,a much better quad core was released.

I was in the same situation about a month back and got a single 7970. At 5760*1080 I get about 25fps in Battlefield 3 on ultra and 40 on high
