System Build Upgrades - Do You Pay For Your Own Upgrades or Do Mum & Dad?

Geekazoid

My parents are very nice and helpfull people. But they've always had the "If you want it you've gotta work for it" mentality^^ So i've paid for everything myself.

Well I hope you do at 28 years old. :P

I knew I shouldn't've displayed my age on my profile. :o

Well sponging of mum and dad is just wrong I think. ;)

Everything I've bought has come out of my own pocket.

That's not what you told me yesterday. :D

I pay everything by myself, except for the rent, bills and food in our home.

My mother almost never gives me money, but sometimes she forces me to give her money. The joys of living in a family in which mother refuses to get a job and father is dead...

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

I work full time and pay rent >_> buying a new computer is the biggest #firstworldproblem i have

I work full time, professional desk job, 6 years working experience, just got promoted to senior post. Live in the most expensive city in my country and earning 20% above living wage.

Yet purchasing a "rig" is a huge problem because 1st, I live away from parents and 2nd, despite everything my salary barely reaches American minimum wage? A "value gaming pc" would be a month's salary.

Newly industrialized country problem?

I worked part time and cut expenses on travel and food for 4 years... All I got is the machine in my sig... I blame the economy...

Everything is a bit better now since just cutting expenses on travel and food can land me some pretty good parts...

I got my machine as an upgrade from my previous laptop due to it basically dieing. Following that I've either payed for or salvaged every update since I got it. Mostly the later.

I do however get money from them either due to birthdays or Christmas.

I pay for everything, I hate relying on someone for my stuff. My rig is 10x better becasue of that fact.

I would hate to go to my mum and dad and say 'I need to upgrade my system, can I have some money that I didn't earn to do that please?'

Makes me feel gross typing it

i feel the same way its like how could i ask for a 1000 bucks so i can get a pc and sit on my ass all day and play videogames or sit on the internet

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.1 Corinthians 13:4

I pay for little miscellaneous items in my pc that I can't really justify asking for, like led strips/fans/thermal paste/sleeved extensions...with pocket money from my parents...oh dammit, I don't qualify...

But really, I would pay for my own rig if I could, but I can't because I'm a full-time boarder at my school, so weekend/after school jobs is a bit hard to come across. When holidays come, I do jobs around the house (mostly fixing things/cleaning/gardening) and I get some pocket money off that... so...that's sort of like doing a job...riiigghhht?

BUT

I only got my rig on my birthday last year, and nothing is gonna be upgraded anytime soon.

I paid for my MacBook Pro Retina myself. I basically have the money for a beast PC now, but I somehow do not feel that I have enough yet :P But I am paying for it myself, when that time comes.

I had a dreamcast as a kid for my birthday, that's the last time I asked my parents to buy me something.. But I started working since I'm 14, so I didn't need to ask my parents for money to buy hardware..
