RAID CARD: LSI 8888-ELP w/ BBU and 256MB Cache
SSD: ADATA SX900 64GB
HDD 1: 2x 3TB Seagete ST3000DM001
HDD 2: 1x 3TB Western Digital WD30EZRX
HDD 3: 1x 2TB Seagate ST2000DM001
HDD 4: 2x 500GB Hitachi something

Expander Case: SE3016 16-bay SAS Expander case (The 2TB and 500GB drives are in here).
 
Software and Configuration:

My server is running Windows Home Server 2011 and FlexRAID for the array and data storage pooling.

The array is running essentailly 4x 3TB in a "RAID 5-like" configuration. This is done using FlexRAID and their DRU system. The two 500GB HDD's and the 2TB HDD are combined together to form a single virtual 3TB HDD, which is then pared with the 3 other 3TB HDD's. This gives a total space of 12TB, with 9TB usable after parity (Note, actual formatted TiB space is less). The SAS Expander is attached via Multichannel SAS Cable SFF-8087 to the LSI 8888-ELP.

All 3 of the 3TB HDD's are connected directly to the motherboard and stored in the case, because the LSI 8888-ELP does not support HDD's larger then 2TB. Eventually this will be upgraded with a 3TB+ supporting LSI RAID Card or HBA Card.

 
Usage:
The server is both a file and media server. I back up all my computers to it nightly using incremental, image based backups. In addition, I store all my HD Blu-Ray and DVD rips of movies and TV shows on here, which is handled by Plex Media Server.
 
Backup:
The Media is not backed up. This is partially because my Internet cannot support the speeds and bandwidth necessary to do so, and partially because I cannot afford a local backup solution for the whole server.

The server SSD boot drive itself, plus irreplaceable documents and pictures are backed up nightly to an external 1TB HDD that is connected via USB 2.0 (A WD 1TB Elite drive, the one with the E-Ink display).

The Backups of my computers are not backed up, since unless both the server and the computer died at the same time, I'll at least have 2 copies (One copy of Data from the computer, and one copy of data as the backup on the server itself).

This system is NOT protected against fire/flood/theft.

 
Additional info:
Most of the parts for the server were just spare parts that were lying around. The RAID Card was cheap from eBay, and came as a discounted bundle with the SE3016 expander case. The SAS Expander was purchased because I wanted the ability to massively expand the array size without having a stupid large PC case and a beast PSU.

So now we're finally into Summer in Aus i thought I should looking into a slightly better cooling solution than just turning on my exhaust fans when I leave for work in the morning so I found this Reptile enclosure heater/cooler.

 

I set the ideal temp as 30, fans kick in at 36degrees. Lucky I did, she's a bit warm in there today. (currently 41 degrees at 6:00pm)

Windows 8.1, JBOD. Initially configured as RAID1, but windows was unable to expand the RAID beyond 15TB, so I was forced to go JBOD.

No backup. As most of the media stored are not original creations of my own, not backing up is my way of punishing myself should anything happen.

One does not "Upgrade"! Just add more drives! :P

But if Im going to add more drives I need a new or one more controller, and a new expander, and a PSU, a new mobo and CPU. Ehhh... I thing I'll just look for dupefiles for now and delete them :P

Why not see if you can pick up a SAS expander case? Does your server/controller have any free SAS ports?

Software and Configuration:
My server/NAS is running Windows 8.1 and im using storage spaces for the array as all the drivers are different volume and models. 
My array currently consists of 8 drives totalling 22TB. The array is setup in parity so the usable space is probably closer to 14tb
 
Usage:
I use the system as a home server/NAS, it holds all my data (Excluding games), tv shows, movies and photos. It runs plex media server which is used to deliver video to 5 or 6 other devices.
 
Backup:
The is arrays backed up once a month to a couple of external usb drives (not ideal, i know)
 
Additional info:
Nearly all the components have been salvaged from past builds. In the future i want to move the whole thing into a norco case. I have just finished building it and testing software. I know i need to do some cable management. :P

Yeah i know. Im having real trouble getting the sata and power for the drives to be neat. The stupid layout of the sata PCIE card doesnt help either.

I just looked over the last few pages of this thread, there's been some crazy stuff added  :o

 

I'm getting some new hardware for my server soon (supermicro case :D) and I'll be using Solaris 11 instead of CentOS (I was originally using mint).

 

The only upgrade to the actual storage is getting though is a 240GB intel 530 for the L2 ARC because my current 64GB crucial M4 is a bit too small and slow for my taste. (L2 ARC is the level 2 ZFS cache (behind RAM) for those not familiar with ZFS)

 

I'll be making a separate build log, but for now I just thought I'd update this thread.  :P

Windows 7 - All JBOD. I use junctions to merge the drives, works perfectly for me. 
 
Usage:
I use the storage for movies and series, i have media players around the house that access it. I also have a 150/75 home line, so I can stream it to any remote location or to my mobile devices.
 
Backup:
What is this "backup" you speak of?
 
Additional info:
Most 3TB drives were bought for $110 or less and most 4TB drives were bought for $130 or less.

I've put together a server here. As for the OS and storage config I'm currently unsure.

Perfectly adequate for data storage. I'm using "green" drives and I'm saturating gigabit easily.

But you need MOAR SPEED
