Project: HD4890 Revival

So while working on my main rig Project: Cosmos Sv2 I realized that whenever I get my my watercooling parts I'll have to take my computer out of commission for a week or so while I finalize the case. I dread using my laptop even though it's pretty decent but it's loud gets really hot etc, I need a replacement desktop. So looking around I found that I have enough parts to make 1 maybe 2 spare computers I have an i3 system I could build or I could build a phenom II 955 system.

The spare parts I have available for this build:

Phenom II 955

Core i3 2130(I think that's the model of it)

MSI 970A-G45 AM3

ASRock H77 Pro4-M

8GB G.Skill Ripjaws

8GB G.Skill low profile

Cougar 700W PSu

Corsair 650W PSU

Zalman CNPS 9900 cooler

CM Hyper 212 evo cooler

3 BitFenix blue spectre pro fans that are in good condition not like the rest I have

250gb and 300gb hard drives

non window Bitfenix Shinobi with red accents

In either case I would need a video card, for sure if I go all AMD. Unfortunately the only old card I have is a HD4890 with a fan that has failed(years of being left on I guess).

I talked with XFX and I wasn't able to get warranty on it, something about I didn't register it or something idk I wasn't expecting a warranty on a 5yr old card anyways. So I asked them instead if I could warranty some fans on my current XFX 7950 and they approved! So I should get the new fan tomorrow to try and install in this 4890. Stay tuned for more or if you really want more right now check out my current project here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/164305-ongoing-project-cosmos-sv2-system-makeover-and-plans-for-watercooling/

Always register your card

XFX offers lifetime warranty

so when you are 70 just go to them and they will give you a modern card at that time ;)

Yea I bought this 4890 back when I could care less since I didn't have to pay for rent, food, bills etc but now it's different hence why I registered my 7950 and why I guess they approved the warranty fans.

Ok managed to get a small amount of time to work on this card for my build. managed to start tearing it apart.

JuiDlB3l.jpg

Full res: http://i.imgur.com/JuiDlB3.jpg

Trusty screwdriver.

Apparently the whole heat sink is only held on with the 4 screws at the back.

IQDDlrjl.jpg

Full res: http://i.imgur.com/IQDDlrj.jpg

At least it was simple to take the heatsink off unfortunately this is all I was able to do with the time I have.

Alright so a little more time spent on this. Neatly laid out all my gpu parts.

BcicDtdl.jpg

Full res: http://i.imgur.com/BcicDtd.jpg

So the new fan is obviously larger in diameter however it's actually lower profile than the old fan which kinda surprised me. Also it will fit within the confines of the heatpipes of the heatsink bonus!

Full res: http://i.imgur.com/pclJr99.jpg

dLDe2M6l.jpg

Full res: http://i.imgur.com/dLDe2M6.jpg

It also looks like the new fan will clear the mounting posts on the plastic shroud just barely but I'll have to cut away part of the gap closer they used that sits between 2 of the posts.

Full res: http://i.imgur.com/I9ZxrlW.jpg

I'll have to do the cutting at work tomorrow since I can't disturb other people in the house. Check back then thanks for reading!

If the fan didn't fit/work then I'd personally strap a 80-92mm fan over the top of the shroud taking air in. Strapped around the shroud with many cable ties of course :)

Cos.. Ghetto.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Oh I'll make it work! Plus what fun would it be just super gluing a fan to the shroud? I get to hack stuff apart trying to do this. Plus I want this for a more permanent rig and I may need slots beside the gpu in the future even though I'm only building it to replace my main rig while I do the big watercooling upgrade for my Cosmos Sv2 build.

Agreed, and on that note I'll say i'd prefer cable ties to glue.. If its ghetto, you shouldn't try to hide it :)

Ghetto & Proud.

Haha ok true and I guess cable ties would actually look pretty good if done right but we'll see if I can pull this off first.

Yep Yep, I wouldn't expect you to do it cable tied without your thread title saying ghetto anyway.

Your obviously going for a cleaner look so have at it and enjoy, god I love oldschool builds so much.

Alright it was a super long day at work and well pretty rough but I managed to get some work done. I look pretty hacked up and well it is but none of the channels are blocked. The material they made those fins out of is a hell of a lot more fragile than a CPU heatsink so I'll try and straighten them out some more. Also it turns out the new fan has a lower profile mount as well and the blades would scrape the cooler which I solved with some very thin plastic washers.

Well she's in there and nothing hits so only thing left to do is mount it on the card then build the rest of the system and hope all the parts still work. I think it looks pretty cool with the newer fan lol.

It does look pretty rough but there's little that can be done about it as the material is so fragile. I'm sure it would be easy enough to clean up though, all in all it's a good mod.
