Rock/Metal fans, what songs do you use to test new headphones?

Recommended Posts

I mainly listen to rock/metal music, I guess it makes sense to use songs in the same genre to test new headphones.

So, what songs do you use? I am going to the shop later today, trying to get some suggestions here.

I just listen to KLAQ for a few hours once I get a new pair of headphones. Decent variety of rock songs to test the ranges.

I test using different genres, usually a mix of power & prog metal. Followed up with some Slayer, Meshuggah, Exodus etc for some heaviness.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Recently "Gimme The Sweet & Lowdown" and "Don't Take Me For Granted" by Social Distortion are the ones I can tell differences between

For testing my headphones i use these

On bad headphones this one will sound horrible

And for the bass test i use this one

Since it feels pretty flat without the bass

I usually just listen to the music that I like

If it's for testing I usually use some technical death metal or something in that vein. It will give a good picture of how headphone can produce sounds in a varied enviroment.

Rage Against the Machine - Take The Power Back is really nice to test bass punch. Slash - Vocalise is also really nice.

I made a Spotify playlist of songs I often use when testing gear and settings and such: http://open.spotify.com/user/vvnieminen/playlist/0sRh6VMkzmiY4soJApNymf

and an image of the playlist in case you're not a Spotify user:

Lots of goodies on that list :)

I put it through some Draw the Emotional, Foreground Eclipse, and IZNA to see if it can do most frequency bands, then move on to some Techno/Electronica/Trance then onto some Classical music....

Whoa, I clicked play on that video. What a terrible song. Jeez.

So I'm guessing you can't hear the kazoo....?

So I'm guessing you can't hear the kazoo....?

Honestly. It was too generic to even distinguish proper sounds, it just faded into the background. All I could perceive was a woman with a mediocre voice oversinging music that I can only presume would appeal to the type of people that always repost stupid heartfelt appeals on Facebook.

If we all like this, We can cure cancer!

So yeah, Fuck the kazoo!

Dream Theater's album Metropolis Part 2. It has a lot of detail and a lot of panning and stereo effects.

Alter of Plagues's album Teethed Glory and Injury. It's a very layered album with a lot of highs and a lot of lows.

Slayer's album God Hates Us All (remastered). It's a greatly produced album, you can tell all the instruments apart, drums are specify detailed.

This may not apply to all headphones, but most of the good headphones I have used have let me appreciate those aspects of the albums.

Aint a "post good music" thread.

Haha, clearly.

I couldn't imagine trying out new headphones and listening to a band that sounds like an opening act for Adele. No offense if that's your thing, but investing in decent audio equipment and listening to dreary music is pretty hilarious.

No offense if that's your thing

It's my least-liked song by Grace Potter. I find myself skipping it most of the time, but I'll admit to blasting it occasionally.
