Does anyone have any familiarity with the antec earthwatts ea-500d 500w psu? It should be fine for the gtx 970 but still some input would be nice

It's a great PSU. Made by Delta and has pretty much nothing bad about it if you don't consider the color.

 

It will support a 970 fine, but I wouldn't do any wild overclocks with it

Are you getting a dedicated graphics card? 

 

If you're just using integrated graphics, that build won't even pull 100W under full load.

Honestly I would rather buy a diablotek over the CX. There are better option, CX is one of the worst you can go with.

Nothing wrong with Diablotek tbh... it's just that they advertise twice as much power as the PSU can actually handle. But if you get a 600W labeled Diablotek to power a system that'll pull max 200W, then there's not really any worry of your PSU blowing up

I've got a 500w Be Quiet! PSU. It has no issues running my FX 8320 at 4.8GHz along with my overclocked R9 270 GAMING and a bunch of fans. However, I used to have a Coolmax 500w. Back when I had my A8-3850 it was fine, but it couldn't supply enough power to run my R9 270 if I increased the power limit and put load on it. After I got my 8320 it was about two days of overheating and overloading before it was dead for good.

 

Although, the 4 years of unfiltered air going through it did mean that there was a lot of dust and dog hair in that thing. (I have a PSU air filter now.)

Some of Be Quiet's PSUs are quite good quality, so being able to keep an overclocked 8cFX and a 270 isn't a surprise. A Coolmax though is a different story :P

I think this should be changed:

to

" The maximum amount of amps (or max current) on the 12V  rail(s) of the power supply multiplied by twelve, is the maximum amount of power that it can give on 12V ."

OK so we all can calculate what is the best PS for our rig, but now that its built who has bought/configured the best PS for their rig? How best to prove/disprove our PS choice?

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

Depends what kind of PSU you're looking at. For a quality built unit then 400W

when you say minimum psu (X)watts, anything above that number will give maximum performance right? The number is I assume a little above the maximum system draw?

Anything above that number will give the same performance. The wattage I provide is a minimum recommended wattage. With a quality PSU you could go lower, but at that point it's not guaranteed to be good for your components and could result in poor performance or damage to your PSU if using a lower quality one

Hello!

I need some advice and information regarding my PSU; whether it is good enough for the video card I'm planning to get or if I need to replace it with another one and if it is compatible all together.

My hardware:

Motherboard:

MSI S-FM2 mATX FM2-A75MA-P

Processor:

AMD A10 Quad-Core 5800K 3,80 GHz

RAM:

8GB DDR3 (1333GHz)

Hard disk:

HDD 1TB 3,5' SATA3 (7200)

Current integrated GPU:

AMD Radeon HD 7660D - planning to get the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 750Ti (2GB, GDDR5)

Current PSU:

LC POWER LC420H-12

I think my PC only eats around 200-250W of power. Correct me if I'm wrong - I'm new to this.

Now, my PC is slow most of the time and I'm convinced it's PSU's fault for not being efficient enough. (?) I hope I'm right because I've seen the processor in action and it was not THAT slow. Also the PC is brand new and it can't be it's age.

And I'm planning to get Antec VP600P EC 600W 80+

Hey there, welcome to Linus Tech Tips!

 

The issue with your PC is that although the PC may draw 200-250W of power, your power supply is only rated for 15A on the 12V rail, so the maximum amount of 12V power it can give to your components, is only 180W. It is already at it's limit under load and will not be able to handle a dedicated GPU.

 

This is a really good quality PSU and it's the one I would suggest if you're considering adding a graphics card like a 750Ti.
