Do connections for monitors affect colour ?

Hey guys, been a while since I posted and I was just wondering depending on the connection you use to display to your monitor, does it affect the colour itself? So I did some tests to see if the monitors (Acer H236Hl bid) were like this from the factory so I swapped the connections they were using. In our case its HDMI and DVI. Doing this the results were always DVI has more of a deep colour while as HDMI was a bit lighter. I personally prefer HDMI but im not sure if a DVI to HDMI connection would change anything. It's not to noticeable but it's there and I would like explanation if possible.

 

P.s They were like this since day one.

If it's analog, like VGA, yes sometimes. A shoddy cable can cause issues. 

Otherwise no. 

HDMI and DVI are digitally compatible. It depends on your video device and monitor for the way they handle the signal. 

Remember, digital signals are fine as long as the signal makes it.

Analog benefits from a lot of shielding.

No. They're digital interfaces. It doesn't matter if you use DVI or HDMI, it's the same video signals going through.

Okay, I see you guys but why do either of the monitors that I chose to use with DVI have deeper colours.

It's likely the card BUT some devices put out hdmi as a signal with less colors by default to increase compatibility with TVs. Some NVIDIA cards do this i know. The ps3 does it as well. 

I think the color needs to be set to "YCbCr444 "but let me double check that real quick. 

Don't use YCbCr444, that's not it. Set to full color. Tell me your GPU and I'll tell you how to check this setting.

If you're using a NVIDIA card, when you use HDMI it sometimes treats displays as HDTVs and sets the color to Limited Range RGB instead of Full Range RGB.  You can change this setting manually in NVIDIA's control panel.

Did you change it from YCbCr444 to full RGB? Cause I was wrong when I initially posted that.

I did it from RBG to YCbCr444

AHH I forgot about that. NVIDIA doesnt offer full RGB because ...fuck you thats why. 

They don't think users are intelligent enough to handle it. 

There's a registry edit to fix this but that no longer works. I THINK the tool still works, but I'm not sure.

That said if YCbCr444 makes them look the same, the color mode on the first may be like that. And if that looks fine to you, keep it.

The monitor might have a different preset for hdmi, making the colors look different. Try changing the settings on the monitor itself.

My Dell SP2309W looks exactly the same with HDMI and DVI, so i would say if you're using a digital connection then no, but as others have said an analogue cable may look different.

 

HDMI uses sRGB in the 4:4:4 colour space,  whereas DVI only uses RGB 0-255. So if you are using a high end camera (still or video) that supports 4:2:2, or better, then you may notice more colours in HDMI. This may be why your DVI looks deeper (it will pick up the lower RGB tones)
