What is the worst advice you heard someone tell someone who is building a PC for the first time

Cokeman

I have heard "Don't use the stock CPU cooler." "You don't need a good CPU save the money and buy a better GPU." "AMD CPU's are bad." "The R9 290x is the only graphics card worth getting." "Nvidia GPU's are bad." AMD GPU's are bad." "Get a PSU that just meets how much power you need and use the money somewhere else." What is some horrible advice you have heard?

"You should buy a mac"

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

"How hard can it be?" - Jeremy Clarkson

"Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary, that's what gets you." - Jeremy Clarkson

"There's an old saying that God exists in your search for him. I just want you to understand that I ain't looking." - Leslie Nielsen

Use drr3 ram on ddr2 slot. I guess the guy who told the guy was stupid. It won't work because the pins don't match up.

In certain ways and at different things

Mac is just so easy to use just for web browsing and everyday things like email (in fact I'm using mac right now.) Its also good for programing and video editing. But windows is better for things like gaming and Youtube.

"Don't use the stock CPU cooler." can be good advice.

My mom and I were in Bestbuy (we no longer shop there for the most part) a few years back looking for some RAM for my grandmother's laptop. The guy at the store decided to stop and ask us if we needed help and my mom told him that she knew exactly what she needs, and she didn't need any help (she said this politely). Now, my mom has been a Systems Admin for a large manufacturer in the U.S. for over 10 years, so she knows exactly what she's talking about - plus she has me just in case :)

Then the guy notices we're looking at laptop RAM and asks us if we're looking at upgrading a laptop. Mom says yes, and it's for an older model Acer that only uses DDR2 memory. Bestbuy guy insists that we should use DDR3 in the laptop since it's newer and blah blah. Mom says the laptop does not support DDR3 memory and will not fit. Guy continues to insist that it will work, so my mom tells him off and he goes to cry in his corner.

Best time at Bestbuy ever.

and programming and everyday things the only thing that seems reasonable useful on a mac is editing.

"All an Antivirus does is attract virus to the PC."     I had to hold back from slapping some sense into that kid, saddest part was that he was studding computer sciences, with that mentality I doubt he finished school.

Mystery is the source of all true science.

Not the advice itself that's bad, but the superstition that it's "bad luck"
