Why is it AM1?

I'm wondering why AMD gave their newest socket such a name...

It sounds like Intel Socket 478.

AM4 would've been better.

There never was a AM1 socket, ony AM2, AM2+, AM3 and AM3+.

If it were AM4 then it would mean that it's the latest enthusiast socket.

AM1 brings great value to the market, for all purposes where a low power efficient CPU is needed. It was called AM1 to mean it's the entry level AMD CPU+GPU products.

Makes sense. I didn't know that the number of pins will affect the socket number. I thought it was just generation.

A few months, Kabini if i remember.

But to answer OP they never made AM1, it was 939. And it's better than the other name of FS1b. Also might have something to do with pins but AMD pin counts have changed very little since 754. (always been around 938-942 pins).

However I don't know where they will go from here. AM1.1.3a?

AM1 isnt a socket, its the platform (yes i know -.-)

socket is  FS1b

to make an analogy, AM1 refers to what would in a non SOC chip, the chipset, while FS1b refers to the actual socket
