Car insurance. Surprisingly, with 10 months of ownership of me car, a year of no claims bonus, 1yr 3mths since obtaining my licence and actually being 18 instead of 17, my insurance got halved xD

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Dad got this 120GB feller to replace the trusty Hitachi 80GB 5.4KRPM ripper in my file server/video workhorse. Not having to wait multiple minutes for it to boot and then a few more to do anything will be nice.

EDIT: Ok I'm salty how fast my file server boots now lol. Server 2012 R2 boots so quick you get about 3-5 seconds of the UEFI spinny boi and then you're dumped in the desktop and ready to go 3 seconds after that (about 20-25 seconds from button press to full chooch). Compared to my main rig that takes a full minute from button press to ready...

Also peep my phone's increasingly bad camera. Hopefully that'll be fixed once mom has money to get my sister and lil ol me our upgrades.

Weird, every phone when I set up without a sim, and then later insert a Bell sim. Seems to wipe the entire phone.

I've had my Eastpak backpack for almost 10 years now, but last month I noticed that there are wear holes in the bottom corners.  Time for a new backpack.

I decided to give the eBags TLS Professional Slim a try.

1959446818_eBagsTLSProfessionalSlim.jpg.d7f930e09e876cfc38fd82ed93b985ce.jpg

Loving it, but it's not perfect.  The metal zipper pulls are clanking like crazy, so I'll probably modify those soon to quiet them down.

I also heard about people accidentally dropping this bag because the plastic clips at the bottom of the shoulder straps can let go, so I'm looking into replacing those with carabiners ASAP.

Just picked this up in the mail today.

The table on my bandsaw is pretty small (12" x 12") and the miter gauge is a bit of a joke (small and a bit sloppy) so I'm going to make a bigger table (probably 18" x 18" or maybe a bit bigger) from built-up aluminum plate to replace the old one. I did make a wooden sled for cutting stock too large for the miter gauge but the fit of the oak runner would get tight when the humidity was high or get loose when it was low and the sled itself eventually warped.

I can make the miter gauge slot by using two 3/8" plates over another plate, leaving a gap between them. I will have to mill a 1/16" x 1/8" rabbit on the bottom edge of each top plate that will form the slot for the disk on the end of the miter gauge bar that keeps the miter gauge from tipping when it overhangs the front edge of the table. I can probably use my Daddy's home made router table for his 1/2 HP router to make the rabbit by using a 1/4" shank straight carbide bit and taking really light passes.

I'm debating on whether to make the fence for the new miter gauge from oak or aluminum bar stock. Either one will take about the same amount of work.

I'm still debating on how to make a rip fence. I could just use a piece of aluminum bar or angle stock for it and use small bar clamps to secure it or get some 1/16" x 1" x 2" aluminum tube and dismantle the old fence, move the "innards" from the old fence to the new one, and extend the clamp screw. I would have to use a piece of heavy sheet or light plate on the blade side of the fence since the old fence "innards" has a plastic piece on the bottom at each end that leaves a gap at the bottom of the fence that thin stock can slip under (I currently have a piece of 1/16" aluminum sheet fastened to the old fence to fill that gap). Decisions, decisions!

When I get around to making the new table, I'll document it on the tool thread.

Various VHS tapes:

Japanese tapes. Yeah.

Also, here's a comparison between the two copies of that one VeggieTales episode I have.

Two different prints of Larry-Boy and the Rumor Weed.

The one on the left was released for the Christian bookstore market. Distributed by Word Entertainment, this tape contains a promo for the accompanying soundtrack.

The one on the right was released for standard retailers. Distributed by Lyrick Studios, this tape does not contain any previews... or any copyright warnings, to the best of my knowledge, either.

I just bought ten of these Kingston 16GB USB 3.0 flash drives.

IMG_0049.thumb.JPG.e0f52b98da3812ac146e6523473c935a.JPG

I wanted to get some identical drives to use for Macrium Reflect rescue media for restoring images but Reflect's Win PE app won't install on drives larger than 4GB. The smallest USB 3.0 flash drives I could find from reliable manufacturers at reasonable prices (not just the cheapest) were 16GB. I did find some USB 2.0 4GB drives at Frys.com and ordered them but multiple things went horribly wrong with the order from the word go (I'm never ordering from them again), including problems with their website screwing up the order (twice), the order disappearing from tracking, and them refusing to return my emails (I finally resorted to phone calls and a BBB complaint to settle things). It turned out the order was shipped, it did eventually arrive, and has since been returned.

While waiting for the ill fated order, I looked into using some older Kingston 8 GB USB 3.0 flash drives I have instead and replacing them with larger ones. I did some fooling around with the 8GB drives and, although it galled my soul to do it, I found they would work for rescue media if I shrank each one's partition to 3.79GB so I ordered the new 16GB drives from B&H Photo (they arrived before the Frys order did).

I labeled all the new drives for the computers they were going to be kept with (two for each of three notebooks and four for the desktop), shrank the old 8GB drives to 3.79GB, then labeled the old drives as rescue drives for each of my four computers.

The old drives are fine for use on a desktop but they couldn't be plugged in side by side on the notebooks, which is why I got the slimmer 16GB drives. I'm happy with them. The fatter ones will be OK as rescue drives since only one will ever be plugged in at a time.

Happened across an old Pentax MG 35mm SLR at a thrift shop last evening for $8... couldn't pass it up for that steal of a deal, I've been wanting a decent film camera to kind of tinker with. I couldn't get it to work correctly in the store but it didn't seem like anything was actually broken, just seized from sitting around or what-have-you, figured a bit of a deep clean would help that along. It's a bit rough in places (battery cap is stripped real bad so that needs to be replaced, leather grip is certainly worn...), but I managed to free up the lens release and film advance and somehow even got the shutter to work once or twice with these mystery-aged batteries while screwing with the film advance. I'm excited see if it's actually working properly once I replace the batteries, then I'll just need to find some half-decent film for a half-decent price.
