Good CPU cooler for i7 4790K?

mat45

I've seen people using them and getting ok temps, you just won't be overclocking.

On a 4690k some are hitting 73c with the Evo.

If a 212 evo can handle my 3930k at 4.2ghz, it'll most certainly be fine with a 4690k.  You could probably hit 4.5 with one on a 4690k if you use good TIM and fans.

Yes it will, but he isn't using it on a 4690K, he'll be using it on a 4790k, which generates a lot more heat.

It will cool a 4790k, but just don't try to overclock or run prime95, the good thing about new CPU's is they have thermal throttling, so if it does get too hot it will lower the clock speeds till it gets down to its safe TDP.

The TDP is the same on both chips

That maybe the case, but the 4790k will reach the TDP quicker.

If you're just setting and forgetting all the motherboards using adaptive volts will run 1.2v through the chip at stock turbo clocks (4.4Ghz), which will cause more heat.

I've set mine to 1.161v@stock and it keeps it a little cooler.

I know how they can heat up and what I'm using to cool it, the 4690k will not generate as much heats as the 4790k.

A Evo 212 will be better than stock cooling for sure, but its not good enough to push an overclock on a 4790k, though a few little under volt tweaks and it will keep it cooler.

Good case airflow will help the Evo 212 cool better too.

You're going for a high end chip which will benefit some good higher end cooling, the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3 is getting some good numbers on the 4790k too.

Really depends on how much the OP wants to spend on cooling.

The EVO 212 cooled the Sandy's and Ivy's well, but thanks to Intel still skimping on die TIM temps are higher.

I'm speaking from someone who has used a lot of coolers to find the right one, felt burnt when reviews and word of mouth on forums claim something is "awesome" and it turns out to be crap.

You should see my box of coolers and fans for this reason.

So I'm only speaking from my real world experience with the 4790k and a Plymouth of coolers and fans. (No custom loops as explained further up)

What I settled on, and is doing a really good job keeping it around the 60c (gaming/encoding/photoshop etc) was a H110 in Push/Pull with Noctua NF-A14 fans all in a Phanteks Enthoo Primo case.

And I'm sorry no one can keep a 4790k under 50c running prime95 small fft with a 4.6Ghz overclock (seen 1 guy claim this on air, but no pictures).

Maybe delidded and a state of the art custom loop, but not normally.
