Good CPU cooler for i7 4790K?

mat45

Hey guys. I have a question for you:

I have an i7 4790K and I wanted to replace the stock cooler with a much better one.

What cooler would you suggest?

Budget: 60 euros max

P.S. I have an aerocool xpredator x3 as case...

You need a pretty beefy cooler. NH-D14 if you can stand the brown.

The NH-D14 and the Cryrorig R1 Ultimate/Universal costa round 80 euros here in Italy and I can't afford that. Any other suggestions?

The cooler master ones are probably your best bet then, solid coolers and fairly inexpensive.

I forgot to tell you. I have High Profile Ram and I hear that the CM 212 will interfere with them. Is that true?

Scythe mugen 4 would be the best bet then I think.

You can always pull off the heatspreader of the RAM. Won't damage anything.

Or maybe I can put the RAM sticks in the other two banks since I've only got 2 sticks?

Depends on what you use your pc for, I personally would try to keep them in dual channel mode. So thats why I ripped of the headspreader of one of both sticks in my previous pc. It won't damage anything.

I have a motherboard that supports dual channel and 2 sticks of 8 Gb or RAM 1866 mhz: a z97x gaming 7 from Gigabyte. I use that for gaming. Since my mobo has 4 banks dual channel, I was trying to say that I can put the sticks to the farthest banks and that shouldn't cause any problem. I know that removing the heatsing on the RAM sticks doesn't cause damage but still, I prefer my RAMs with the Heatsink on.

Alright but most of the times only slots 1-3 and 2-4 can work in dual channel. But when you're not doing any video rendering and stuff like that you won't notice the performance "decrease".

If its the devil red edition i would sugest Coolermaster V8 GTS (colourscheme match)

Performance is very nice, my I7-4770K runs 65c on full load at 4.4GHz and around 50c ingame and 25c idle

Ram clearance is pretty sweet too, you can use Kingston HyperX Beast in all 4 slots

and price is decent too compared to build quality and performance and looks !

Let's agree to disagree

I know. I wanted to put them in slot 2 and 4. That's what I meant when I said I wanted to move the sticks.

If you're willing to look at a AIO, I'm running a Corsair H110 on my 4790k, in AIDA64 stress test I max out at 71/3c, depending on the ambient temps.

Gaming (GTX780ti Classified dumping hot air in the case) and everyday use with heavy CPU intensive apps (Handbrake, Photoshop etc) it doesn't go over 60c, I am using Noctua fans in Push/Pull, but the temps weren't much different in just pull. (I just had 4 fans sitting here..lol)

When going from my 3570k@4.5Ghz to the 4790k on stock, I nearly died when I saw the huge temp difference, my 3570k never went over 53c with the same Corsair H110 as well as the Kraken X60.

I'm not sure how MrTiC get 65c with a 4770k with a overclock on air as it runs hotter than the 4790k.

Here's a review of the cooler MrTiC mentioned:

Alpenfohn Brocken 2 if you can get one. It doesn't cover any ram slots and should be about the same sort of price as the coolermaster hyper evo.

I use e-key.it or amazon.it. They're both very good...

Also I've got no plans to overclock at the moment. This is my very first rig I'm building and I've never overclocked anything...

Then buy Hyper Evo 212, it will keep CPU at good temperatures at stock clock and when u plan to overclock u can buy Noctua NH-D14 (thats the best air cooler atm).
